a while ago, i did this screening thing online to see if i was depressed. it said according to what my answers were, i was depressed and it warned me to go to a doctor before i hurt myself. and i'm starting to think it might be right..i hate my life and i hate living, sometimes i just wish i would die..but at the same time, i dont think i'm depressed. sometimes im happy, i like my friends family (kinda) and boyfriend. but my friends seem to be getting farther and farther apart from me, as well my family and boyfriend. i love them all, but i'd be happier not living, you know what i mean? im not saying i'm going to kill myself, please dont take it the wrong way. the symptoms for stress and depression are kinda the same but i dont understand why i'd be depressed or stressed.
so what do you think? am i mistakin stress for depression?
what should i do?

One of the deceptive things about being depressed is that you almost *can't* self-diagnose. Being depressed necessarily causes loss of perspective, as well as the inability to see nuance, as well as keep up with objective signs and symptoms.
I advise you to go to 2 or 3 of your most trusted friends/family and tell them what you've written here, after asking them if they have noticed changes in your behavior or affect lately.
The good thing about going to a professional is that they generally won't waste a lot of time before putting you on one of the many safe and effective anti-depressants being used nowadays.
You say you're not going to kill yourself, but the thought that you even mention this says you realize it's one possibility for people who are unhappy.
Generally, the reason people commit suicide is because their world boils down (eventually) to just 2 black-and-white choices:
1.Continue in this emotional pain.
2. End the pain by whatever means necessary.
IOW, because their world has shrunk, they don't realize there's a whole bunch of "gray" they're missing----many many other choices besides these 2.
So what is worrisome to me about your email is that you say those friends, family and your boyfriend seem to be " getting farther and farther apart" from you.
In light of all the information you have, are you able to see that the potential exists for a very real and serious problem?
Please seek help from a counselor, psychologist, minister, etc.

If you continue to feel that way for a month or more, talk to a medical doctor, you might have clinical depression. If it goes away by then, you're probably just stressed. The amount of time you feel bad is an important part of making a diagnosis.
I work in mental health, and have been treated for depression for about 20 years. Best wishes.

You don't feel depression, it just affects you and everyone around you. Maybe you are and maybe your not. Its time for change. Its time to take a good look at yourself, and see what will make you happy. What can you do to improve what you say might be stress, is your work too much or are you just growing up and things are changing. which is part of life. Do something within the family to make yourself a part of it, start with communication. Good Luck

Depression stems from a chemical imbalance usually having to do w/a chemical in your body called serotonin. Depression doesn't literally mean you're down ALL the time. It can be EXACTLY as you've described. With-drawling from friends and family is a cruel side effect of it, because this is a time in your life you really need those who love you to support you. I would highly recommend you seek professional help. It doesn't necessarily have to be a phych doc, regular Md's can also prescribe antidepressants... But it isn't their specialty.
PLEASE get the help you need. You'll get a sense of normalcy again when you do and things will feel a lot smoother.

Yes, you should go to the doctor or psychologist/psychiatrist - whether you have stress or depression. Sometimes being happy but hating your own life - is extremely serious. - You seem to me to have signs of depression.
Even though things are fine with your frendships, family, and boyfriend-there may be something else that you need to talk about.

It wouldn't be a bad thing to talk to someone. Everybody goes through some sort of problem that either breaks them or makes them stronger. This will make you stronger, but right now you need to seek some professional help to see why you are having these feelings. It will get better.

you are up tight more than anything. think about what you are going thru. also make a list of the pros and cons of death. go to a funeral home and look at a corpse see the emptiness thats laying there. death isnt the answer. ife is beautiful. i wouldnt trade it for nothing in this world. and believe me if you knew me you would never believe why i think like i do. i have been thru alot in my years. lung cancer 3 failed marriages, no money no job no g/f no wife. but yet i find things that makes me smile things to make me laugh and things to make me love, and things opposite of what i just named. but yet i still want to live.

stress is when you are over loaded, depression is when you cant see your way out, depending on your age(the teens are the worst) your brain goes through changes, accept these changes as normal and if you don't get hung up on them, they will pass. find something that you like, and get good at it.

You need help NOW.
Talk to a psych or social worker and they can tell what your next steps should be.
Sounds like you need to be on meds.
Suicide and death are not normal thoughts.
I've been there. It's not a nice feeling.
Good luck.
