Meditation and exercise will help to calm your mind and balance your emotions.
Quit the benedryl, all caffeine and and excess sugar. The spike and crash will only cause you to feel really crappy and not help at all with your insomnia.
After about 2 weeks, you'll feel you body start calming down and you'll be able to think clearer, focus easier and sleep easier.

Benadryl shouldn't be taken for more than 2 weeks at a time.
Go to your health department. If you aren't making much money, they will charge you on a sliding scale. Better yet, see the dept of mental health for your county where you live. They can prescribe medications for stress, or to help you get to sleep. Ambien is a decent sleep aid, and doesn't cause dependence as far as I know.

Stop the benadryl. It will really mess you up and it makes stress worse during the day. It can have non-calming effects on many people, which could explain your increased stress.

Get into the mental health department so you can talk about your problems and your anxiety. They can help you move forward with your life.

If it makes you feel better, I take about 7-8 Tylenol PM pills before bed every night, because I kinda went through the same situation years ago. The problem is that once you're hooked, your body builds up a tolerance to them, and that's why you don't really sleep. My suggestion is to go to one of those DSHS hospitals and see about psychiatric referral; I did it when I didn't have insurance, and now I'm almost normal. Look in the phone book or go online and look into it.

Two things I suggest to you.
The first is to do a mental cleanse...
The address is http://www.30daycleanse.com

The second is to drink Limu Plus every day. It helps you fall asleep within 7 minutes of your head hitting the pillow and you actually wake up an hour earlier feeling like a million bucks.
