Can a priest forgive himself for his own sins?

It is plainly stated in the Bible (not that it would be any less valid if it wasn't - the bible is not the final authority). Christ breathed upon the apostles, the first priests of His Church, symbolizing a special outpouring of the Holy Spirit, and then told them "whose sins YOU forgive, they are forgiven them". Pretty straightforward. Takes real effort to misinterpret this passage. The priests of His Church have been ministering forgiveness in His Name ever since that day.

No, a priest cannot forgive his own sins. He must confess to another priest. Even the Pope has a priest assigned as his confessor.

No. A priest cannot absolve himself of sin.

Jesus gave his apostles the power to forgive sin right after he rose again from the dead:

Joh 20:19 Now when it was late the same day, the first of the week, and the doors were shut, where the disciples were gathered together, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst and said to them: Peace be to you.
Joh 20:20 And when he had said this, he shewed them his hands and his side. The disciples therefore were glad, when they saw the Lord.
Joh 20:21 He said therefore to them again: Peace be to you. As the Father hath sent me, I also send you.
Joh 20:22 When he had said this, he breathed on them; and he said to them: Receive ye the Holy Ghost.
Joh 20:23 Whose sins you shall forgive, they are forgiven them: and whose sins you shall retain, they are retained.

The sacrament of reconciliation, which Jesus personally instituted, has been an integral part of the universal (Catholic) church from that day forward.

It does not say priest can forgive sins in the Bible.

In the Old Testament priest were to make sacrifices for sins, but God alone is the only one that can forgive us our sins.

This is the exact reason I went from Catholic to Protestant. Nothing made sense to me in terms of relating to the Bible. The only way to get forgiven is to ask the lord from your heart directly, you don't need a priest.

In the Catholic church however, you are in confessional only because the priest is acting as sort of a liason to God. And all a priest has to do is ask God for forgiveness and God gives it.....bang!!
I love the simplicity of all this.

That would have been in the old testatament(Lev 5:10). That pratice is done by Catholics its uncall for because Jesus died for us so we don't have to go to priest to ask for forgiveness just get on your knees and pray to God

He wants us to have direct relationship with him this can happen only when we speak directly to him,.

There is no need for a mediator(priest)

No a priest can't he has no power, this whole thing make people think that the priest is righteous but we are all sinners and have come short of the glory of God

We must all kneel before God and ask him ourselves for forgiveness

Try reading John 20: 21-23. After Jesus rose from the dead, he have the authority and power to forgive and retain sins to His disciples. This authority and power is handed down to the priests.

God the father gives Jesus authority to forgive sins, in the same way Jesus Christ gives priests authority in his name. I don't believe a Priest can forgive his own sins, he must go to confession also.

So Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you; as the Father has sent Me, I also send you." And when He had said this, He breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. "If you forgive the sins of any, their sins have been forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they have been retained." John 20:21-23

Wow, this is a confusing one to respond to. that's approximately potential. Lemme see if i will undergo in strategies historic previous... And in the commencing up, there become.... (LOL) a clergyman who, first of all, could study, and can study (INTERPRET) for the lots, maximum of whom could no longer study in any respect, no longer to show Greek or Hebrew. Then the Vulgate got here alongside, which become written in 'ordinary' Latin (and from which all? translations effect in the present day) And, hmm... I undergo in strategies a number of cases the place human beings might bypass off doing their own translating and 'analyzing' themselves, made a considerable mess of it, began burning toddlers or some such weirdness, and the Catholic church went in and whacked all of them. i think of this become in France someplace. So i assume it is risky to interpret all with the help of your self cuz it may reason all varieties of loopy recommendations (David Koresh) and 'misunderstandings'. So i assume whilst human beings sat around pondering their sins, the solid bishops and clergymen did no longer desire us to bypass forgiving ourselves too extremely, OR punishing ourselves too harshly the two. i assume it comes right down to have confidence - the Catholic church did no longer have confidence a gaggle of illiterate human beings to be waiting to choose whether or no longer their sins have been forgivable in the eyes of God.

only God can forgive our sins & i believe like any other humanbeings, priests make mistakes too & when that happens, they'll ask dierectky from God to pardon them. so, why do we need to confess our sins to a middle person; ie a priest? it doesn't make sense at all.

not to offend anyone, but if i was to go to a priest for forgivness, how do i know God forgives me? just bcoz the priest says so? how does he know? my best bet is to pray and ask God my self to forgive me. all this priest jazz is a waste of time.
