Don't compare Vietnam to the war in Iraq. Vietnam was a war with a country. Iraq is a war with a group of people.

If we leave Iraq now, then the Allied nations are likely to be attacked. Vietnam is different, we signed a peace treaty.

If we wanted to leave Iraq, there will be NO peace treaty.

Actually we did stop the communists. We stopped them for Ten years (1963-1973) with our troops in Vietnam. As a result, we practically bankrupted the former Soviet Union which tried for 10 years to keep up with us in Vietnam. They failed. We actually had a peace treaty in place when we left. Although the North Vietnamese invaded and took over after we left (Apr 1975) we eventually reaped the rewards from the disintegration of the Soviet Union in 1989-1990. Drawing a line in the sand against terrorism in Iraq is actually retarding the efforts of global terrorism. Yes the US is safer without the Soviet Union and we will be safer by conducting and winning this war in Iraq.

After we retreated from Vietnam, MILLIONS were massacred in Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos. The Vietnamese have had to endure 40 years of communist slavery since then. This is what will happen to Iraq and the middle east if we leave.

I guess you're like most Americans, only American life matters and the rest of the world can rot for all you care.

Also, the Vietnamese never threatened to nuke us, and never had the ability. The terrorists have.

nobody said we'd be taken over by the middle east.

first of all, to lose a war, and retreating would be losing, would send a message to the rest of the world that we are that paper tiger osama said we were. secondly, the terrorists want to kill us all. they say convert or die, and i have zero intention of converting. do you? what makes you think they won't come over here and start using suicide bombers like they do in Israel? what makes you think they're not here already? (does it occur to you that if there are 12 million illegal mexicans here, there could be several hundred or thousand terrorists with them? nobody said illegals were all mexican.) like the shooter at the mall in Utah the other day. terrorism hasn't been ruled out in that case, although the authorities say they aren't sure what the motive was.

the assholes we fought in Vietnam were content to stay there. they'd never, as far as i know, expressed the desire to destroy as many infidels as they could lay hands on.

plus, there's also the fact that when we are forced to lose by congress, the terrorists will think we are weak, (we are) and that the next time they attack us we won't do **** about it. these people exploit weakness, and do have a respect for strength. if we presented a united front to them, and showed them we would not tolerate them attacking americans no matter where they were, maybe they'd leave us alone. as it is, we'll be lucky to make it through '08 without a attack.

Well let's see what happened after we were forced to leave Vietnam by the US Congress back then who cut off funding--we lost Afghanistan to the USSR, there were well over 2 million people who were killed in south east Asia due to their political beliefs and we lost Iran to Islamic fascism. China made an effort to subjugate Vietnam--bad mistake on their part.
The cold war was prolonged by at least 10 years.
If we leave Iraq, Iran will no doubt take it over--I don't know about you, but I don't want Saudi Arabia and all those other countries there to get nukes--you want that? That's what's going to happen if we leave. You want another Saddam-type of government trying to threaten world-wide oil supplies? I don't want to pay $8 a gallon gas, pay $200 a month for my utility bill and I don't want to have any sort of decades-long 'no-fly zones', UN meaningless sanctions and despotic rulers killing off the political opposition in mass murderous droves.

No one thinks we'll be taken over by the Middle East. However, unlike Vietnam, terrorists from Iraq could follow us home and stage terror attacks. There were very few terrorists (if any) in Iraq before we invaded. Now they are flooding in to fight our soldiers.

The U.S. mainland was never attacked by the North Vietnamese Army either, but 9/11 showed us we are vulnerable to attacks from the Middle East. By leaving Vietnam, we returned to the prewar status quo. The same could be said about leaving Iraq: returning to the prewar status quo of WTC bombings, U.S. embassy bombings, U.S. naval bombings, etc.

Actually as I remember it, when the Viet Cong were coming into the city the U.S. troops were pulling out and the Vietnamese were at the embassy trying to get on U.S. helicopters that were flying out folks on our side people with families were trying to get on helicopters from the roof of the embassy because the Viet Cong were coming. I can't remember if it was Saigon or Hanoi but look it up in Wikipedia or other research to get the story. The Viet Cong did not come into the U.S. but they definitely went into Vietnam.

we didn't become communists, which means we didn't lose in vietnam. we pulled out because our Congress and American public didn't want us there anymore.

Gee, that sounds familiar.

the cold war kept us from becoming communists. we were in a nuclear standoff with Russia for more than 40 years. each side knew that pushing the button meant certain death for both sides. we don't have that 'luxury' with the terrorists. they don't care if they die or not.

I don't think it has anything to do with a fear of us being taken over by Iraq or any country in the Middle-east. I think it's more of a fear of being controlled by soaring oil prices thus forcing our commerce and economy to collapse. Also, who knows what the terrorist are planning next?
