Certainly the first thing to consider is knowing the song as well as you know your own name, even backwards. IE: American Idol failed auditions.
Know yourself as well, in how you involve yourself in the character of the song and the singer. The idea after all is for you to capture and involve the audience, while at the same time, not strictly caring about them on a personal level.
In a situation where you and the audience happen to be well lit you might try focusing on a point just behind, and above them, but not so blatant as to make it look as though you aren't making eye contact.
In a situation where the audience is dark, they may also likely be no less than 30 feet away from you, so you wouldn't "see" them in any case.
Obviously you'll get many valid answers, and "Relax" may seem impossible, but everyone develops their own techniques, that evolve into confidence, and perhaps even boost egos.
There's really no real secret to it, nor is it a life threatening situation.
One thing you might also try is getting involved in Chorus work. Perhaps being in a group, who help support each other in many ways, might help. The entire end result, your bottom line is do your best, get the audience to believe they are part of the experience.

You just have to keep doing it. The biggest fear of singing in front of an audience is people be judgmental. But most of the time you are your own worst critic!
next time you're watching a performance realize how relaxed you are and your thought processes. Are you negatively critiquing the performer's every move? Most likely not. So you should then realize that people are not so judgmental and they want to see you succeed and do well just like you want to!
You can take baby steps that help. Perform in front of family and friends and ask them for "honest opinions" on how you can improve. The internet is also a great source. Many chat rooms feature karaoke. Also try http://www.daretosing.com/ for honest critiques and help on songs.
And always ALWAYS record yourself and then critique yourself! There is ALWAYS room for improvement! The day you say you're the best singer and it's perfect is when you'll be poor at singing.

To get over your fear of singing in front of people, I would say that you should sing to people like friends or family because they can also give you advice. If you have enough confidence, don't worry what the audience thinks. If you think that you sound good, then maybe you will sound good.

Sometimes it helps when a friend or someone who is close to you is in the front row and looking at them will make you more relaxed.
The more you perform in front of audiences, the less nervous you are. If you look like you're having a good time, the audience will too. Just be confident!
Best of luck!

Something that helps me is, in addition to practicing dilligently and making sure I know the piece well, is imagining that there is an audience when I practice. That way, you are practicing singing while nervous. If you do that, even if you are nervous again on stage, you will know you can still nail the piece, because you were nervous when you practiced. It also helps me to completely immerse myself in the piece when I am performing. I completely concentrate on counting the music and concentrate on the moment. Anytime you mess up is gone immediately after, so concentrate on each moment.

Baby steps in the way of you can't sing til you speak. After being a leadership role that often required me talk confidently in public, I found that singing in public came really easily to me afterwards.
So get out there and start speaking up at meetings in groups, and you'll be fine.

Only way to get over fear is doing the thing you are afraid of. I hear most to the big time singers still get nervous when they go on stage .

You get over it when you realize the benefits of being discovered are better than the drawbacks of never getting out there and showing people whatcha got.
