Look at the teeth, unless he's/she's been chewing on rocks they shouldn't be worn down if he/she is under 7 also, check if there's tartar build up and discoloration-usually after the age of 4 unless toothbrushing or bone chewing is done regularly. Look at the paw pads are they very very leathery -an older than 4 dog will have rougher paws than a dog of a year or two. The eyes;but, usually only when they get past 8 do they get cloudy. Russells always act like silly puppies -so activity isn't a way to tell.

My Jack Russell, Toby just turned 11 years old. I have had him since he was 10 weeks old. I noticed as he got to be around 7 years old, his face started turning all white. You can tell alot by their teeth, like how much wear is on them and the condition of them. Jack Russells also seem to get cataracts. Look at the eyes and see if there is a bluish tint to them. My Jack has the early signs of cataracts. I took him to the Vet to get his teeth cleaned and the vet said that his eyes show early signs of cataracts. The Jack Russell that I rescued off of a busy street about 2 months ago was completed blind, thank goodness his family claimed him. Good Luck to you and your Jack Russell.

If you don't have a paper from when you got your dog stating the age, your vet will only be able to give you an estimate. They do this by examining his/her teeth, eyes, etc. Dogs with grey on their faces are over the age of 5. Certain eye issues, like cataracts, start after age 7-8 (in most cases)
Remember to be sympathetic to your vet - dogs cannot talk and say "Hi, I'm __ years old". It's all a guessing game.

Yes, between a young dog and an old dog an older dog usually has alot more plaque and discoloration than say a younger dog. the older the more stained. Or get a second opinion from another vet.

His hair is wirey when he is old and there are no freckles under his belly. He may also have a clowdy look in his eyes when he's old.
