I use two programs, Spybot search and Destroy and Add-Aware.
Both free. You need both to get good coverage.

If you know the name of the adware/spyware on your system, then you can remove them by going to your control panel, select 'add/Remove' programs and scroll down the list. Once you have spotted them then select to remove and that should start uninstalling for you.
Alternatively, use softwares like Norton antivrus which will detect them each time they get loaded onto your PC.

use CCleaner. Also known as Crap Cleaner. It's freeware. You can go through what's in the startup and get rid of it. You can also delete history files and stuff with this (e.g. what site's you've been to).
