I tend to have faith in Consumer Reports, and for the past several years their top-rated small SUV has been the Subaru Forester, with the Toyota RAV4 and the Honda CR-V not far behind.
All three have an excellent history of reliability, and deliver reasonable fuel economy.
You probably couldn't go wrong with any one of these three.

i'd look into the Ford get away, Toyota Rav4, Mitsubishi Outlander, Subaru Forester, Hyundai Santa Fe, and Honda CR-V. those are all respectable small SUV's with 4-cylinders and that they are all incredibly carlike. for my section, i admire the hot Forester lots, yet you're able to look and determine for your self. Oh, haha, you mentioned she'd want a crossover. Whoops! nicely, the Forester is form of like a crossover. many times i think of crossover SUV's are greater costly than small SUV's.

I absolutely LOVE my Toyota Rav4. They have made them a slight bit bigger this year too, which makes them still small, but might make the wheel base a little longer which would be nice.
The Rav4 was rated one of the top 3 vehicles in it's class the year I bought it (2000). I would happily buy another one (pending satisfaction on a test drive and research, of course but I understand they are still quite highly rated). It has off-road capabilities--which I have never tested--but it is sure GREAT for getting me around in all the snow. You wouldn't believe how little I have to shovel my driveway thanks to it! Just a path to and around it, and if the snow plow piles it up close to or above the axel height I just go out and shovel a little to get in and out. Plus the maneuverability! Great in parking lots.
My mileage isn't bad either, and it was rated one of the top environmenatlly friendly that year too, if I'm not mistaken. They also hold their value fairly well.
I should buy stock or do commercials--lol.

I have a '98 Honda CR-V and I have never had any major problems. It currently has 120k miles. You can buy one for around $5k and it'll last another 100k miles.
