My daughter, (who will be 8 in two weeks), wants to get her ears pierced and says "everyone else has pierced ears - even the boys? in my class!"

Is it too soon?

I was 8 when I got mine pierced...it was the biggest deal in the world to me!! I think she's old enough...My mom told me "when you're old enough to take care of them, I'll let you get them done".
That worked for me because I was diligent with cleaning and turning them. Good luck! :)

Well, I(am 9) and got my ears pierced when I wasn't even 1 year old! Therefore, I have no memory of it, which is good because I don't remember the pain. And you won't get humiliated as much, because, well, babies cry. But, as an acceptable age, because your daughter isn't a baby,I think it would have to be 8 or 9. Why? Because you would be "strong" when the gun goes through your ear. Sure, the gun will still hurt, but it won't hurt as much if you get her ears pierced now.

This is often a cultural matter.

I have seen week-old babies with their ears done.

Remember however, if she is active, she has to be a bit more cautious with how she wears her hair until they heal.

I am sure there are pierced boys in her school. But that is not cultural.

Yes it hurts, you can tell her that. They are, after all, sticking a needle through her flesh. BUT the pain is over in a split second and you do not want to damage her trust in you by telling her a mistruth. If it hurt that much, fewer people would do it.

BIG hint, Mom. Go with her and make it "fun". Also, insist that the piercer use the best quality fittings. Anything less and she can get infections. My girls and I had a blast at the shops when I finally gave in to them. This way, also, I knew it was being done properly.

I personally think that is not to soon to get your daughter's ears pierced. I got my daughters ears pierced when she was two months old, I felt bad at first because she was too small, but I didn't want her to go through the pain when she got older.

I know this can be a very controversial topic, but I got my daughters ears pierced when she was a baby. I don't see any reason she shouldn't be able to. She is even old enough at 8 to care for the cleaning herself (with you over her shoulder making sure she does it of course). But, ultimately it's up to you and you just have to go with what you feel about it. Good luck.

Well I got my ears pierced when I was six/seven with no problems. Many babies have pierced ears. However, I know a lot of friends whose parents have hang-ups about pierced ears, even till they were eighteen. Just go somewhere reputable to ensure there are no infections - also remember that certain kinds of skin can't have pierced ears.

both my daughters had their ears pierced by the time the were like 6 weeks old that way they are use to it and do not pull them out or mess with them they just grow up and it is all done so i guess my point of view is no but i would tell her that it will stink for a few minutes but that the pain does not last long and that she has to take care of them and keep them clean

This is a personal choice that needs to be based on what you and her agree on, not peer pressure to be like anyone else.

With that said, my 10 yr old and 9 yr old have their ears pierced. Both boys. Yes both of their ears. For the boys I left it as a choice because it is not a socal norm. I wanted to make sure that it was really their choice and they begged me for 2 years to get it done. Knowing that they did not know any boys that had it, and that it was truely a choice they made with out pressure from peers, we did it.

3 of 4 of my girls have their ears pierced. The girls all get them done for either their 1st birthday or 1st christmas.

I don't agree with piercing a child's ears at birth. I think they should be allowed to decide for themselves whether or not they want their ear's pierced. If your daughter wants her ear's pierced and is willing to take care of keeping them clean, I would let her.

My parents decided to let my sister choose when she'd have her ears pierced. She is 27 and they are still unpierced.

I had a girlfriend whose father is a Doctor in acupuncture, and guess where the human body has its most important pressure points? Yup. The earlobes. Not that he stopped her having pierced ears, but it can ruin some great points for healing the body.
