it could be a skin infection of some kind, cats love to clean themselves but biting fur out and having scabs is not a good sign

you really should take your cat in to be seen, it could've been suffering from this condition all these years or the itching from the scab is affecting it and maybe thats why its doing that

im sure the vet can nail it down and get your cat back to simply cleaning itself without biting off its fur

The most likely diagnosis is Flea Allergy Dermatitis. Youe natural response will most likely be, "I've never seen a flea on my cat". That is because cats are such good groomers, they end up eating the fleas that are crawling on them. Many cats will then end up getting tapeworms from eating the flea. Weird huh?

My best advice is to first have your cat checked by the vet, in case it is something else, like an infection or anxiety problem. If it is fleas, keep your cat on a monthly flea preventative like Advantage or Frontline. You will also want to treat the environment. For every adult flea, there can be thousands of flea eggs and larvae in your yard and/or your carpet. If the problem has been going on for awile, it may take a few months of treatments to get the flea load under control. Your vet may also need to treat your cat with anti-inflammatories if the allergy are too severe or painfull.

Good luck.

It could be an allergy, fleas, a skin disease or a rather extreme nervous habit. The only way to be sure would be to take him to the vet.

Mange is possible. Why allow this for years? http://www.maybeckvet.com/mange.html Get your cat treated by a reputable vet. Have a purrfect year.

Itchy skin, or if he has any black spots on his gums, that's pulp that has been exposed and it hurts, so he likes to bury it and bite into his soft fur. My cat has this, except with licking. You need a dental appointment with your kittie. It'll help him.
