Well, I expected problems when I brought a new pet mouse home (duh). But my cats are usually very receptive to a strong NO! They usually do not repeat behavior once I say that a few times. But they will not stop trying to get into the mouse's aquarium. I know of course that little Scabbers is my cats' natural prey, but I love all of my pets and want to protect the little mouse. Is there anything I can do to keep them away from the aquarium? I thought about putting some double-sided tape down around the aquarium. Any other/better ideas?

I have a mesh lid that is very secure, so there is very little chance of the cats getting in. I couldn't resist bringing this adorable mouse home, and keeping him from becoming snake food :)

Not that I have any problems with snake owners, of course.

Actually, I've had very few problems with my mouse/cat combo. I have a household full of pets (5 cats, 2 birds, 2 frogs, 1 mouse + anything I feed outside). I keep a squirt bottle handy and whenever the cats get more than just a passing curiosity, they get threatened with it. Now, there is always a cat laying within inches of the mouse cage and neither of them could care less. The mouse actually taunts the cat (climbs the side of his cage and presses his belly fur out the sides (he's a long-hair "silkie"). I have a Rainbow Lorie (think small parrot) that we allow out of his cage for a couple hours every night. Tane will fly down on to the floor and the cats leave him alone...mind you, we do supervise these little adventures with a squirt bottle in hand.

On the other hand, I'm having a problem with my oldest and youngest females (Alpha and Alpha wannabe) and my youngest male (only 6 months old). They seem to love to torture him. Now all he seems to do is hide. But we're hoping the squirt bottles work in this case too.

Blessings,

Honestly your scaring the **** out of that mouse and continued stress from those cats will eventually harm him even more, get those cats out of the room and make sure they know not to touch it or even go by it or continued spraying from a water bottle will help

however if your not home those cats are going to try everything in the book to get that mouse it may have been a bad move on your part, but dont get angry Ive made lots of mistakes with pets and thats why i know so much more about this stuff now

Sorry, but the cat-mouse pet combo just does not work. Cats love furry little creatures that move fast, so the only way to protect the mouse is to get him a real big and entertaining acquarium and fix a lid on top of it. Secure the lid, because cats can learn by themselves to open doors and boxes (mine do). Provide ventilation to the mouse. Good luck!

That was just wrong to do to your cat's.It is like dropping a pizza in the middle of a weight watchers meeting and telling them NO!,It is just a matter of time before it is devoured.Find a new home for the poor little thing before the cats get cleaver enough to get it out of the aquarium.

spray something around the cage that smells to them, but really they just like watching it run around. it's new to them and they are curious to what it is. Weigh it down and sooner or later they will get bored with it. Took a while for mine to do it when i had animals, but they meant the rats no harm. Just loved to watch them.

Keep them out of the room where you keep the mouse.

Just make sure you have a good solid fitting lid. It should be fine, they wont get in.
