I saw this once. Some girl had her spinning reel filled at a tackle shop. She said they took the spool off and wound it on with a machine, and she came straight to the pier and cast out and only then found the tackle shop had wound the line on the reel in the wrong direction. If that's what happened to you, the solution is simple: keep the spool on the reel and fill it by just winding normally.

If the other poster is correct and it's a problem with the direction you're turning the handle, there should be a little switch which engages a clicker so the handle will only turn in one direction (the correct one). Just about every spinning reel has one of these "anti-reverse" switches, and though I suppose some people have a use for cranking out line, I've found them to be more trouble than they're worth.

There are some reels made by Mitchell that wind the line on the spool backwards from most others. I think the model 308 is one of them. If you used a line winder to add the line, flip the switch the other way. If you wound it on by reeling, I have no idea how you got it on backwards. Hope this helps.

I can assume you were using a spinning reel, and your problem could have been caused by allowing the line to come off the spool the opposite way the bail is turning. Example, most bails on spinning reels put line on by turning clockwise, if the spool is turning counter-clockwise you get serious line twist which would cause line to swirl off, if too much is put on.

I assume that it is a spinning reel which in that case means it was wound on the wrong direction. The next time you do it lay the spool of line on the floor with the label facing up. This should fix your problem.

the only thing i can think of is you have a spinning reel that has the free spool switch engaged and your reeling backwards as for not doing it again there should be a switch on the back of the reel click it the other way and the crank should only move in a foward direction(away from you) and if thats not the problem then i'm lost as well

Make sure the line is going on the reel the same direction it comes off the spool
