When I was your age, in gym class we were expected to run a mile in under ten minutes. Keep up the good work.

Not bad but not amazing either. I had the tenth fastest mile in my class back when I was 12 (I'm 16 now) and I ran it in about 6 minutes and 15 seconds. My class had about 300 people in it, so I'm pretty sure a 7 1/2 minute mile would have made the top 50, definitely the top 75. What I would consider a bad or poor mile time is anything over 9 minutes. Anything under 6 or 6 1/2 is pretty dang fast. I'm in track so I've seen a lot of sub-5 minute miles. I have no idea what I would run now, but I'm guessing I would be around 5:45. Keep in mind though that I've been training since 8th grade. So, in conclusion, I think that 7:38 is a pretty good mile time, and is certainly nothing to be ashamed of. Keep in mind though that there is always room to improve!

In this day an age I believe your 8:30 mile to be much better than the average 12 year olds.
I ran a 5:00 mile, but was beaten at the National Age Group Track Championships by a pair of Twins that ran the 12-13 Age Group mile in 4:28.
I commend you on your running and I know that you will only get faster and faster in the years to come!!!

That's good.
The military physical training test for 18 year olds says that 6:30 is average whil 4:30 is best.
Whe I was 13 I ran a 6:30 mile but I was in long distance, basketball, and track which are nothing but running.

Dude, I have the exact same problem.
I am 13 and I just got back from a 7:30 minute mile.
Your 8:30 mile isn't extremely hot but it isn't bad at all. It all depends on what your goal is, ex. distance/cross country, sprints/track. Or what If that was a distance run and you were doing like, 3 miles or something then that is a fine time.

Your good, keep up the hard work. The best way to train is through repetition workouts. Run shorts distances fast with a short break in between each, you will see amazing results. If you keep running I promise you will break 7 minutes even in no time, any other questions, you can email me at jdslacrosse@yahoo.com. Good Luck running xc and track is by far the best choice to take for a sport. Keep running.

thats awesome man...way to get into running, its a great sport...its about your own time...don't let others tell you how fast or slow you are, who cares what others think. cutting 3 minutes in a year is amazing...dont expect to keep cutting that much, but always work hard and get that time down as far as you can. By the way...8:30 is way above the national average.. thats an awesome time! try cross country..its an awesome sport, always compete against your own time, dont worry about others..you'll see awesome improvement and i can bet if you keep running you'll be sub 7 going into high school if you work at it...keep on keeping on man!

Enjoy running for what it is. Don't worry about times at such an early age. You will grow leaps and bounds in terms of your times in the next couple of years. Around that age, I ran around low 6's middle 5 (5:20 or so). Concentrate on enjoying you training and your times will come naturally.
