I use the term saved loosely. It may supprise most of you that Britain would never of spoken German and no German would of ever invaded our nation in a time of war, such as the 2nd world war. Are you people aware of the Battle of Britain? Obviously not in many cases with some of the rubbish you Americans go on about. We beat Germany and they ran away scared, dropping all plans to attack Britain. Infact the saw the Russians and the US as an easier target after 1940, seeing as the most powerful nation of all time told them where to go. Our navy was also capable of defending our shores and Germany were more than aware of this. That is why they attempted the air attacks first but as most of us know it didnt work and they went home sucking their thumb.

Now thats cleared up can you Americans stop the " we saved you in WW2 " comments, because rememer, after 1940 hardly any Brits were killed in Britain by Germans and we decided to continue the war even though we didnt have to.

Soldierdude.............you obviously went to an underprivaliged school, probably somewhere where gangs shot each other up for kicks and all that but you did not save us. As someone has pointed out you assisted us in the latter stages of war.

If I buy a car is it mine?

If I buy a Tank is it mine?

If I buy a Destroyer is it mine?

My point is the US gave the UK NOTHING. It was all paid for or swapped for one of our many, many, many, many, many military bases around the world. Everything we got of the US was ours no matter who made it.

hxs yes you are right about the nuclear bomb business but Britain invented the nuclear bomb(from what I've heard from researchers,i don't know if it's true) but because all of the British factories were being bombed we gave you Yanks the idea to create them.

We saved our own *** in WW2 in the Battle Of Britain and saved yours in the process and no one can deny that, there were only about 6,7 possibly 8 US pilots fighting for Britain so you can hardly say you saved us.If the truths known we saved your *** on plenty of occasions and you let us down in quite a few battles.

American history books are written in such a way that they make America look like the best although they aren't and if you disagree with their side of the story then they class you as Anti-American....pathetic.

Yeah you supplied us but that didn't do us a lot of good.

If ANYONE saved our ***(which no one did)it would be the Canadians,Australians etc because they were with us and helped us all the way through the war.

God save the Queen!!!!

Please read all of this before you get angry

If the US would not have become involved in the war when we did then it would have, at the very least, bought more time for Germany. It has been proven that Germany was very close to developing nuclear weapons. It has also been proven that the Germans were trying to develop nukes that were deliverable via rocket technology. They would have been able to pick off targets from a safe distance.

My guess is that there is nothing that the UK, or anyone else including the US, would have been able to do if the German's efforts would have come to fruition. If the US was not in the war then we would not have been trying help German scientist escape persecution to help develop our own nukes. This would have allowed those crazy Nazi bastards to first take over the British Isles and then move on to the US.

We would all be speaking German!

It is only Yanks who say this sort of thing. Most Americans, including Canadians who were and are much more reliable friends, hate being lumped in with the international bandits of the continent's parasite state. They actually believe that their military prowess saved Europe from Germany when they finally decided, out of the goodness of their hearts, to help Europe out. In actual fact, having contributed mightily to Hitler's re-arming, US industry welcomed the opportunity to bleed the rest of Europe, especially Britain as it turned out, dry. When the Government was given the excuse by Japan to enter the war, they also entered on the Western front mainly to protect their corporates' investments. It was the increased industrial commitment of the US (lend-lease ensured post-war economic super-powerdom at the expense of the then super-powers who had fought each other to a standstill) which tipped the balance although the sheer number of US troops speeded the process. Their deluded beliefs about the brilliance of their armed forces expertise has been engendered by Hollywood, particularly, where all the heroes have US accents and the bunglers English or French - or a Yank attempt them including in films 'based on true events' where nationalities are switched.

It's a question that's impossible to answer. There are too many variables.
As for the rest: I am aware of the Battle of Britain, Dunkirk, Neville Chamberlain, Operation Sea Lion, the Lend Lease programs of the U.S. and Canada and a few other plans, programs and operations.
I'm sure all of Europe is proud of England for deciding to continue the war even though it didn't have to. What would Churchill say to that? Churchill knew that Germany remained a threat to England.
I'm always embarrassed by Americans spouting the "we saved your bacon in WWII' comments. True or not, appreciated or not, it's just plain rude. I'm not embarrassed by our contributions to the effort though. We did our part as well as England and Russia.

I guess you havent read about the "miracle of Sept 1, 1940" Fighter Command was nearly brought to its knees until Goerring stopped bombing radar and air installations. The change of targets was crucial. It is now believed that Fighter Command was perhaps only 24 hours away from defeat when the attack on the cities occurred. The breathing space this gave Fighter Command was crucial.

Hitler liked the Yanks, and did not consider them the lower forms of life the way he looked at Slavs and Jews. He rather seen a Europe of 'Nordic' peoples. He thought the Brits would roll over and he'd establish a Vichy type govt in Britain. No one would be speaking German in Britain. Thanks to him, the Battle of Britain was a draw.....his eyes were elsewhere, otherwise there'd be a Vichy type govt in London.

We americans didn't save Britain in WW2, the fate of the second world war rested on the outcome of Operation Barbarossa.

They would be speaking the Queens English if the French hadn't save their asses in the War of Independence I bet they don't like to learn that in history but that is a historic fact. The difference with WW2 Britain and her allies stood up to Hitler while USA watched and that is also a historic fact. What is important though is what nation was the first to back America in the war in Iraq and that was Britain.

Not I.

Unlike our American friends, I remember a few key points of history. They only joined WW2 after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbour.

Well after the Battle of Britain ended and well within the Battle of the Atlantic.

If anything, the Brits had their butts not saved but assisted by former colonies, Canada being foremost in this one by supplying aircrafts, pilots and supplies that went across the Atlantic with minimal escorts that still put a severe dent in the German Navy. Especially their U-boat fleet.

Not to diss the Brits. You guys probably have the finest soldiers in the world, miles ahead of the Yanks but not that far ahead of us back in Canada. Even without our help, you'd probably have made it. We just made it happen a bit faster.

No one country saving another, agreed. It was an allied effort. (Hence the name) One thing tho, the German's did continue bombing raids well into 1944... there was never a choice in continuing. A nice timeline site,
