We both go to college, and talked often last semester on the bus. I hardly see her now, but bump into her from time to time. I suppose that I like her, but pretty much just as a friend. For that reason, I don't want to seem like I'm coming onto her (not yet at least, maybe not ever, who knows). How do I ask about her boyfriend status. I know she had one last summer, but don't know if they are together (he left the state (hawaii) for college). I'm not sure why, but I just want to know. I'm really shy, and just kinda had my heart crushed (a little) so I'm not ready to date quite yet.

Just use plain english dude. You 2 have wasted enough time as it is, so why waste more. Ask her n see whats up. If you wait to long, she will have a man, and then your assed out. You may have a great girl there man,....are you gonna let her get away without even trying?

Ok if your really shy maybe just instead of coming right out and doing the direct approach of asking her Hey ya got a man??-- since you knew she had a boyfriend last summer and he went to Hawaii for college just casually mention something along the lines of "I sure do miss the warmer weather and am looking forward to it...so I can go to the beach.;.speaking of beaches, I remember you mentioning that your boyfriend went to Hawaii for college. How does he like it there??"
That should break the ice and reveal to you whether she has a man or not.
Good Luck!!!!!!

Ask her what she did for Valentines Day. It is ambiguous enough to be interpreted as you simply making conversation.
