I am writing a paper on Internet Censorship for a senior college level course in modern China. I have several web sites with lots of info on what's been happening, especially with Google, but I was hoping to talk to someone who has actually tried to access websites in China and have been frustrated by the experience. This would add a personal level of great detail to my paper. Thanks.

I was in China half the summer in 2006 studying abroad. From personal experience, from using internet cafes to wireless connections in coffee shops, normal surfing is not much of a problem. However, one night I searched some politically sensitive areas, Tibet, Taiwan, Tiananmen square etc. You were able to access webpages pertaining to these areas but after a short while they were no longer available.

I am a Chinese that live in Beijing and I can tell you that the Internet Censorship in China is not as bad as some said. After all I can come to this web site and answer this question. You will be fine to visit sides like cnn.com or YouTube. You won't have too much troble if you are just visiting site that nomal people will go. But if you are trying to visit sites about Tibet and Taiwan independents or some other politicalsite site there is a good chance it is blocked.

If you cannot read/speak chinese or if you don't have the right connections to get correct information from people working in this field then I would even not think about writing this paper.
It will end up as most of those articles and it will contribute again to the bad picture of internet censorship in China and this thanks to unprofessional work.
Get your info from the the right persons, persons that for sure you will not find here.
I recommend to start your researches on the chinese version of Clever. Could be that you are lucky to get some links, if not than at least you get some first hand experiences.

I have been to China twice and stayed three weeks each time. I went to internet cafes and used the internet in hotels. I never had any trouble reading anything I wanted to news etc. on the internet over there . Was there 4 years ago and 2 years ago. I read all the regular news sites. Drudge report etc. When you watch CNN in your hotel room, the tv goes blank when something about tieneman square or Tiawan comes on goes blank for about 2 minutes.

I read Chinese and have never had a problem accessing a Chinese Web site from Italy, the US or Canada (apart from the occasional slow connection, apparently during peak traffic times). However, my various Chinese penpals/contacts have not been able to access my business Web site from China.
