It basically just takes a picture of the inside of your eye, just like the article you linked states.

The idea behind scanning the retina of a cow (or any other living creature, humans included) and its value as an identifier has not so much to do with what kind of information you can get, but the difficulty in counterfeiting it. It's easy to forge a signature on a check, but nobody has yet developed the technology to replicate an eyeball. You can identify that cow from a picture of its retina because the patterns of arteries and veins in the retina are unique for everyone (even your left and right eyes will have differences between them) and because you can't copy them. To try and defeat this system you'd have to steal that eye and put it into another cow (ew...). Needless to say, such a trick is sufficiently difficult that retinal scanning makes for a good way to reliably identify a cow (or person) without having to worry about forgery of some sort.

A retinal scans information is very similar to a fingerprints information. They are both used to identify individual humans, or animals.

One big differance is that it is possible to fake fingerprints, where it is not possible to fake a retinal scan.

The image in a retinal scan is a picture of the veins and artieries on your retina and the unique pattern that they form, and the image of a fingerprint is the pattern of the ridges and valleys.
