September should be fine. Hurricanes are an issue, but you'll be booking so far ahead that you can't predict whether or not you'll be affected by one. Rest assured -- the cruise line will not risk their hugely expensive ship, nor endanger their passengers. If they think it's safe, it almost certainly is.
If a hurricane IS out there when it's time to depart, they'll either modify the itinerary or cancel the cruise and refund your money. If all else fails, cruise ships have the speed and seakeeping ability to dodge or outrun a hurricane.
Bottom line is, don't worry; go and you'll have a really great time.

September is the peak of hurricane season (I'm from Florida) and tickets should be cheaper because of that same reason. Your travel itinerary may be affected, but they usually do not cancel the cruise (they re-route it) unless the hurricane will hit the port where it is departing from, on the departure day. If I was you I would wait until October or November when the chance is much lower.

It is hurricane season but the cruise ship is well aware of any storms and will not put you through it. You'll just be brought around the storm. If there is a storm at that island they will bring you to another i believe.
