I am doing a college research paper on drug/alcohol evaluations in Sociology class but cant find the answers I need anywhere. Does anyone know where or who administers them? Do they have to be certified? Also, does the evaluator make patient take drug test or is that optional? What are the steps to completing an alcohol/drug evaluation?

What Is A Drug Evaluation

Usually these tests are done at the request of a prospective or current employer, or law enforcement. They are generally done in health centers or special court centers.
Here's how it went for me: new job required it. They have a health center (occupational medicine) and I made an appointment and they had a nurse there. I had to sign a paper, take a cup, go into the bathroom and pee; could NOT flush or wash hands and she stood right outside. She documented that I had nothing with me (spare cup). I gave blood samples, had a physical and I was done.
My friend was required to give hair samples as well as pee in a cup for his job.
The samples go to a lab that evaluates them blindly- the lab doesn't know who they are from, just account numbers on the samples. Results go back to the health center- fail one and you are terminated.
Court-appoiunted tests are usually part of porbation; the probie has to go to a center and the court's probation officer watches them give the sample and verifies it came from the right person. Sample sent to the lab- blind- results come back to court.
Parents can buy sample kits and send them away.
So usually it's either a nurse or probation officer who collects the sample, a third-party lab who does the actual evaluation, and results are reported to the requestor.
