I do not consider myself atheist, agnostic, or religious. I know that sounds funny but I believe it is these classifications that keep us apart. I think we all have a lot to learn from each other but that will never happen as long as we keep typecasting ourselves. As soon as someone says what they are the other closes his ears and mind, and opens his mouth. I think all of us would do a lot better if we would just stop judging one another.

I am a Christian. I'd really like to answer this question. I hope you don't mind. An atheist is a non-believer ofChrist, God who has not yet reached the place on their path/journey to know Christ,God. God loves all his children. He does not want to lose any of His children. It's been known that even at the time of death one will convert. All a Christian can do is be kind, patient, loving, caring sharing, and understand.

Well, there's a problem in how your assessing this situation.

Atheists are active because Christians are active. If "witnessing" stopped, Atheists would have little reason to bring religion into conversations.

Of course, there will always be debates, but those will occur because people like to seek out others to test their own beliefs for logical strength.

Debates are separate from witnessing and the pressure from Atheists would drop if witnessing was dropped.

It's simple: Every day, some religious group want to change laws to comply with their religion, change science to comply with their religion or change others to comply with their religion.
For example:
Gay marriage: No one is forcing anyone to marry someone of the same sex, so what's the big deal?
Abortion: No one is forcing people to have an abortion, so what's the big deal?
Contraception: No one is forcing people to use it, so what's the big deal?
Evolution: No one is forcing people to believe it, just like no one is forcing you to believe gravity exists, but you will still learn about it in science class.

So, what is the big deal? The big deal is that religious people do not agree with these concepts, so they constantly feel the need to force those beliefs on everyone else.

The rest of us are pretty sick of you guys telling us to live by your beliefs, hence the many vitriolic responses christians get.

I think because atheists are a minority, and their/our whole lives have had people tell us all sorts of horrible things during the process. As for why people who are atheists are passionate about disproving gods. I agree with the answerer who said that many are ex-theists. . .and this is an ingrained habit for many who are in an evangelical religion. It seems like the more evangelical/conservative the person's past, the more passionate they are about their atheism. My theory is that a convert is a convert, and that those converted to a religion are passionate about it, as are those converted to atheism. Personally I think that both those witnessing to others AND those arguing atheism to religious people are annoying and rude.

I don't tend to preach because I know I can't change anyone's mind. Religion is very personal, and people have to choose for themselves based on logic and what's in their hearts. For that same reason, I HATE it when people preach to me, as if the only reason I haven't converted to their idea of God is because I didn't know. As if I hadn't thought about something as serious as eternal damnation!?!?!?!

Who asked you to stop witnessing? We just want you to respect us when we say we are not interested in people of religious faith trying to convert us or convince us you're way is the right way. We are completely content with who we are and do not appreciate people trying to change that. For the most part, we don't try to convince you that 'god' doesn't exist. Only when someone is trying to force their views on us that we do not care to absorb do we come back with such a response as 'god' does not exist.

Usually we only mention the non-existence of god in some provocative question about atheists. Like this one.

Stop and we'll stop. It's that simple.

We all hear God's word. Don't kid your self that there are many people in the world that havn't heared God's word or could find out about it if they wanted.

I've heard it so much I could recite it to you. I've heard it so much I'm fed up of hearing it. I've heard it so much that it sounds like advertising, like adverts I see on TV or hear on the radio that interupt the programmes or the music.

I've heard the message so much that when I hear it now I want to shout "SHUT UP!". I have heard this so much that the value of the message is diminished. I have heard this so much that I want to start shouting at those pushing this message to me and I am so frustrated that I find this message everywhere I go that I want to push back and force a counter message on those that force this message on me.

I have heard witnessing so much that it becomes offensive. It is pushed on me so much that the underlying message is:
1. Your ideas about the world are wrong
2. You should think this

I have been pushed about so much by those of faith that I personally have to push back.

Discuss your ideas please with anyone who is receptive.

Please leave me out of your witnessing, I will respond agressively.

How are we hypocritical?

Its spelt 'hypocrites' by the way.

There's also no such thing as 'antheists' and its 'referring'... all in all you make a good point.

OH and its 'witnessing'.

God doesn't exist - but don't have a cow about it.

**No, Sarah - that would be a nihilist, wouldn't it?**
