I regularly drive from Brooklyn, NY to northeastern CT (about 135 miles). Travel websites claim it takes 2 hrs, 40 min. I've done it in 2 hours (middle of the night) but it took 4.5 hours once on a Sunday afternoon with traffic. If I were to continue driving up to Boston, it would take me about another 1.5 hours. The biggest traffic problems are from Fairfield County, CT right into NYC. Occasionally you'll hit problems around Hartford. I ALWAYS recommend driving late at night/very early morning if possible. I like to leave Brooklyn between midnight and 3am. That's when I've made the best time.

It's totally possible to make it to Boston in about 3.5+ hours without driving too fast (at night). It could take about 6 hours in the middle of the day on a holiday.

If there is no traffic, and you are a pretty efficient driver, you can make the trip in 4 hours, no problem.

If there is traffic, and if you have to make stops, then it will take 5 - 6 hours.

A friend of mine once made the trip in 3 1/2 hours, but I don't recommend driving that fast!
