This is kind of gross, but I was recently hospitalized for vomiting blood and I was told I have a Mallory Weiss tear and that it was no big deal. But when I went to my regular doctor to get a prescription refilled, he told me it could kill me. I am confused; is it minor or serious?
(I am recovering from anorexia/bulimia and am not sure if that had anything to do with it.)

MW tears are caused by continuous vomiting that tears the lining of the mucosa around the gastroesophageal junction. It causes hematemesis (bloody vomit) With proper treatment, it may heal in a short amount of time. Serious cases of MW tears can lead to death, but that is extremely rare.

It's produced by severe vomiting and retching. People with your illness and also alcoholics sometimes experience this. It is bad if you don't get treatment for the underlying cause which in your case is bulimia. I hope you get well soon.
