“A few years ago I asked an Alaska State Trooper, “If you had a choice of either having alcohol or marijuana legal which one would you pick? Without hesitation he said,Oh, marijuana! People who drink get drunk, get in their cars, drive fast, go home and beat up their families. People, who smoke marijuana get stoned, get in their cars, drive slowly, go home and eat and play with the kids?
This is so true on all sorts of levels. I can recall countless times where I would have rather been around people who smoked instead of drank due to their resulting behavior.

Well I think it depends on how you mean worse.
Legally marijuana often will get you a bigger fine or ticket.
Toxicity- Alcohol because it can be taken at lethal doses. One cannot overdose on marijuana while many have died of alcohol poisoning.
In terms of dealing with people I think I would rather try to control a some one who is stoned rather than some one who is drunk.
Drive drunk or drive stoned- I would say neither is safe.
Does this mean marijuana should be legalized? I don't really think so.
Both marijuana and alcohol can ruin people's lives repectively or in tandem. The bottom line is that using substances- whichever ones, to a certain point past moderation will have negative effects. Sometimes these negative effects will be minor, say a hang over or a missed class/work. But there are plenty of instances where the effects have resulted in far worse events including death. These sad events are real and do merit mention and they should serve as a caution to people who do choose to use substances for whatever purposes.
Bottom line: Party smart, party safe, you end up having a way better time.

I have a friend who's a med student, and they're actually taught that in no uncertain terms, alcohol is MUCH more damaging. He's seen people with all kinds of drug problems, and he says if you look at a heavy alcohol user and a heavy pot smoker years after they've started, the alcoholic will be MUCH worse.
And for those that say that a marijuana joint is worse than a cigarette- first of all, I'm not sure that's true, given all the other toxins and additives that are ADDED to cigarettes, and secondly, who smokes a pack of joints a day?

It depends on what you mean by "worse." The health effects of alcohol are far worse, but a trunk load of booze won't land you in prison. Also, most jobs will fire you if you test positive for marijuana whether you are high at work or not. As long as you don't show up for work high on alcohol, no job will fire you for drinking. It might not be fair that the lesser poison is illegal and socially unacceptable and the greater poison is legal and socially acceptable, but that's the way the world is -- unfair. Your life will probably be happier and more productive in the long run if you avoid both.

In the real world, marijuana is because its illegal.
If we put them both on a level playing field - I'm inclined to think alcohol is probably worse, although both can become addictive.
