Feed him only the appropriate amount of food in his bowl. Do not leave food out or allow the cat to "free feed" in one of those cat food dispensers. Some cats will eat and eat not becuse they are hungry, but becuase they are bored and eating gives them something pleasurable to do. If you work during the day, give your kitty half a bowl i the morning and then another half a bowl when you get home. Don't leave any food out.

Put a little less food out each time you feed the cat. Slowly it'll stop eating as much.

sounds like a sickness, my cat did the same thing id feed her and she'd come back and ask for more and more??
She ended up dying on me because i didnt think it was a problem..
I'd first take your cat in immediately for a check up and if the vet says its good then in turn simply give it a dose of food at night and once in the morning and im sure you'll get your cat on a good and normal feeding cycle

Give him/her premium canned cat food at recommended servings. Cheaper brands of cat food have fillers which aren't nutritious.
So while the better quality foods seem to be Much more expensive, you can actually feed you cat much smaller amounts.

Why would you not let your cat eat...?
If you mean you just want it to lose weight... feed it dry food. Leave it out all day, then put it in a closet or something at night.
The food, I mean... Don't put the cat in a closet at night...
