It depends on the dogs activity level and if he/she needs that much protein. An older dog is generally less active and therefore could eat a little less or switch to a senior based food, it's basically the same thing except sometimes they put glucosamine and condroitin in older dog foods, but these are supplements you can purchase seperately in the form of pills, treats or liquids. They are good for old, sore joints and hip problems.

If he is a senior (7+ years old), switch him to senior food if you haven't already. Just like when he was a puppy, give him only what he'll regualry eat. If he eats nothing sometimes, like my dog does, DON'T SKIP FEEDING HIM NEXT TIME IT IS TIME FOR HIM TO BE FED! Try to make an effort. You never know. Maybe his stomach hurt and the next time he is better and he will eat. After you think he won't eat any more, just dump it into the garbage or the garbage disposer and still feed him.

It depends on what you consider old. If you mean older than a puppy yes. Puppies are supposed to get way more food because they are growing, compared to a full grown dog.

I switched to a senior-type food. It is for less active dogs. Check with your Vet to be sure.

It's a good idea to buy the type of dog food that is made for "mature" adult dogs. This provides them the vitamins and minerals, etc. they need as they get older and it helps prevent weight gain.

Your dog will eat as much as he or she needs to. "Senior" foods are easier to digest and some even have glucosamine and condroitin for joints. My sheepdog is 13 and some days she eats more food than on other days.
