A church group came to my campus this afternoon, I suppose to try to "recruit" people into their church. I couldn't help but notice that almost every single one of them was FAT. I'm not talking about a little healthy chub.. these people were quite obviously overweight if not obese. Why were they trying to convince other people that they will go to hell if they don't follow god's will, when gluttony is one of the 7 deadly sins?

And don't bother telling me that some people are "naturally fat" or "can't help it" because we all know that is BS and I don't think it's reasonable to assume that all 20 or so of them is predisposed to being overweight.

Gluttony is a difficult one. Yes, its a sin, but many people are under the impression that God is forgiving. It gets pretty ignored, sometimes, and people don't pay much attention to that one. Lust and greed seem to be more on their minds, I guess!

Maybe they joined the church only after becoming "fat", and are still trying to lose weight? Losing weight is hard, and it can take a long time. My friend's mom has been trying obsessively for years now, and she hasn't lost much--she has horrible metabolism and an inactive job. I think that you also have to take into consideration that in a job at the Church, there isn't a -lot- of movement or exercise involved, so their appearance somewhat reflects the job that they have. But really, all there are are excuses. We don't know all of the circumstances of their lifestyles, but they probably shouldn't be preaching to othesr until they can use their own advice, huh?

Hope this helps a bit!

Great question. It is a Deadly Sin but American culture really does make it hard to follow a healthy diet. But a real christian needs to be concerned about all of these sins, and not just the ones (or the interpretations) that serve them the best. Furthermore, be very, very weary of ANY CHURCH that preached going to hell as one of their main motivations/theological points.

I don't think all of the group is predisposed to being overweight. We DON'T all know know that it is bs about some being overweight due to medical concerns rather than over eating when in fact it is true that some do. Most do not eat properly or healthy, and for this reason they are overweight.

Many who are holier than thou will be glad to preach at others while overlooking those issues that are inconvient, for them personally.

Gluttony seems to be something that Christians like to ignore. We are often quick to label smoking and drinking as sins...but for some reason gluttony is accepted or tolerated. Many of the arguments used against smoking and drinking, such as health and addiction, apply equally to overeating. Many believers would not even consider having a glass of wine or smoking a cigarette, but have no qualms about gorging themselves at the dinner table to the point that they feel like they are going to explode. This should not be!

Proverbs 23:20-21 warns us, "Do not join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat, for drunkards and gluttons become poor, and drowsiness clothes them in rags." Proverbs 28:7 declares, "He who keeps the law is a discerning son, but a companion of gluttons disgraces his father." Proverbs 23:2 proclaims, "put a knife to your throat if you are given to gluttony."

Physical appetites are an analogy of our ability to control ourselves. If we are unable to control our eating habits, we are probably also unable to control other habits such as those of the mind (lust, covetousness, anger), and unable to keep our mouth from gossip or strife. We are not to let our appetites control us, but rather we are to have control over our appetites. See Deuteronomy 21:20, Proverbs 23:2, 2 Peter 1:5-7, 2 Timothy 3:1-9, and 2 Corinthians 10:5. God has blessed us by filling the earth with foods that are delicious, nutritious, and even pleasurable. We should honor God's creation by enjoying these foods, and by eating them in appropriate quantities.

yes gluttony is a cardinal sin... however with people who are obese, it's not necessarily how much they eat but what they eat. poorer people are usually heavier than the rich. that's because they have to buy the cheaper cuts of meat which contain more fats, they are out-priced of many of the healthy foods....breads and other high carbohydrate items because they are cheaper and go further and can feed more keep them feeling full longer. also as we age we get heavier because we loss muscle mass...older people can't eat as much or they way they did when they were young . you must never judge, leave that up to god

Is being fat a heath issue.. Of course.. Is there a commandment against it.. Not that I am aware... Have some compassion you have no idea what a heavy person goes through in life. It may not be a natural thing to be heavy but it is easier for some people to get fat than other and harder for some to lose weight... Jim

if you are speaking specifically to Christians, the word Gluttony does not appear in their Bibles. I believe the "7 deadly sins" were created as dogma of the Roman Catholic church.

I guess that just supports the fact that everyone is a sinner. But I do have to say that overeating is not the only thing that makes people obese. There are medications that will do that, thyroid problems, etc. and yes, the fact that some people take in more calories than they burn off.

May God Bless you.

Gluttony IS a sin. We are all sinners though, so this happens to be their weakness. Forgiveness is a virtue though, and maybe they are seeking help from the lord with problems such as their weight.

Yes, it is one of the seven deadly sins.

But its more than gluttony too, its sloth as well.
Gluttony is an endless need for consumption, but if someone wasnt slothful they could still work out and be in shape.
