I don't know that they are any "better" or worse than Goldies. Personally, I think that Lab/Shepherd mixes are some of the coolest dogs out there - as long as you don't mind the shedding, the large amounts of food, and the year round exercise. . .

If you are interested in a Lab, be sure to do all your homework and to get one either from rescue or from a good breeder. These dogs have EXTREMELY high risk for massive joint problems due to poor breeding (problems that can necessitate euthanasia at as early as 6 months old). Read up and use only a trustworthy source.

Aren't Labrador Retrievers and Golden Retrievers almost the same breed of dog? They're both labs, anyway; I've heard the Golden Retriever called the Golden Lab. In any case, both great dogs. A friend of mine had a golden retriever and she was one of the nicest dogs I've ever met. I also have two dogs that are part black labrador retriever and the younger one is the nicest one in the world. :) The older one is a little cranky, but then again, she is kinda old! She also is a great dog.

Labrador Retrievers are better trained in retrieving in cold weather than Golden Retrievers, because the Golden Retrievers are more likely to be kidnapped for its value. Yea Right!!

Ive never had a golden - just a chocolate lab. She was probably one of the most loyal pets Ive ever seen. Im sure goldens are the same. Most retrievers are great dogs.

As a former breeder of Goldens and an owner of several Goldens, I have to say I think they are both great dogs. I prefer the Goldens because of their look. I like their longer hair and their loving temperment. I also know people who are friends of ours who have labs. They are wonderful also. I don't know if your planning on going to a breeder or not but do your homework and go and look at both breeds. Choose the one YOU like better, It is a personal choice.

the goldens have a great personality for all types of people thats why you see them many times as seeing eye dogs, they know how to run and play with children, but they have a calmness that is very suitable for the needs of handicapped people. if you are looking at the chocolates or black labs (short haired) be prepared for chewing issues. my uncle has a black lab that still even though he is like 10 years old bring cow bones from the pasture to chew on. they are very very active and hyper during their first years of course as any mammal does they will slow down as they get older. but uggy (black lab) is kind, gentle, and protective. my uncle has 3 children and has always had the black labs, and they have always been great. the goldens are great just have to get used to the long hair shedding, of course, they arent as hyper as the blacks. so might want to consider that. i wish you the best in your choice, and hope that you enjoy which ever you choose.

Very nice friendly, intelligent dogs. Easy to train. You should be sure to train them though. Contrary to what some people believe, labs will bite if they are not socialised to other dogs and strangers from an early age. You also need to restrict their food intake. Labs are natural gluttons and will eat till they burst. Overfeeding and lack of exercise will result in an obese lab, especially in older dogs.
Golden retrievers are similar to labs but they do shed less hair.

To me, Labs and Goldens are the same personality-wise. Just have more grooming to do with a Golden. I love em both!
