Okay, fill the 5 gallon bucket with water and push the 3 gallon bucket into ti. The 3 gallon bucket will displace 3 gallons of water causing them to flow over the edges of teh bucket. When you remove the 3 gallon bucket, you are left with 2 gallons in the 5 gallon bucket. Empty the 2 gallons into the 3 gallon bucket and fill the 5 gallon bucket of water again, push the 3 gallon bucket into the 5 gallon bucket again to displace the 3 gallons leaving another 2 gallons in the 5 gallon bucket and empty the 2 gallons from the 3 gallon bucket into the 5 gallon bucket, you now have 4 gallons of water.

Fill up the 3 gallon one and pour the 3 gallons into the 5 gallon one. Then fill up the 3 gallon one again and pour it into the 5 gallon one again but only 2 gallons will fit so you have one gallon in the 3 gallon one. Pour that in and then fill up the 3 gallon one again and pour it in again. That gives you 4.
