I have a friend of many years that I told my feelings of her. I stated that I cannot date right now, and she said she wanted to be a friend anyway. She said that she wanted our friendship to grow, and since then, we have become much closer. If she was trying to drive me mad about her, she succeeded. Is that why she wanted our friendship to grow?

I really don't think she had that in mind. If that was her intention then you may have noticed something unusual in her behavior.

In all honesty if you are not ready to go out with her or to be very close as yet then just tell her about. She seems like a reasonable person im sure you'll both come up with some good conclusions.

No,even if you do not want to date her,she obviously likes you as a person & would rather have to deal with not being your gf than losing you as a friend.

No that is not why she wanted to continue as friends and having close friends is a plus because you can count and depend on them.
