this is a sad story... I have a 1997 dodge ram 1500 club cab, 4X4, 5.9L Magnum V8, 8' bed, SLT Laramie features, the HD tow package beautiful truck, i decided to get my oil changed and was working 12 hrs a day 7 days a week so i had it changed at the first place i could get into fast. walmart oil change.... they did the job and less then a month later im driving home from work and the engine sounds like metal to metal. I added a quart of oil just to get home to do repairs. once home i did a complete engine flush with fresh oil and filter, drained, and replaced. i have a horrible knocking noise and figure its a rod knock. im at a toss up whether i should sell my beloved truck, or have it repaired. To put in a used engine will cost me $1500-2000 (which i cant afford until summer comes back around and im back to working construction). I decided to post on craigslist (sobbing badly on the wifes shoulder) could it be its not a rod knock? landlord is gonna tow it...what should I do?

Point your browser to Prosper.com. Place a loan listing telling your story. All of their loans are amortized over 3 years without prepayment penalty (meaning you can get an affordable payment between now and the summer construction season and you can pay it in full when you're back to work). Prosper is peer to peer lending so even if you've had credit challenges you can probably get funded quickly.

You clearly love the truck. If the landlord knows you're in financing to get it repaired, it's not dropping toxins on his property and you're not in violation of a zoning code he'll probably cut you a little slack.

Good luck!

your answer was in that oil you drained out from walmart and weather or not it had metal shavings in it. I doubt rod knocking is what you hear because you said it was a month later. Keep in mind this is a truck and is much much more stronger that a car. You could just have a bad wire or fouled plug making it sound like that.

you can sue the ou used if they did a bad job or left it with no oil, they have done that before. the other it may be an oil level sensor indicator that is lighting up old cars used to take 5 qts of oil only newer engines take more than that.
have it checked by a good mechanic not a back yard joint
