I'm a mix of Italian, English, and Eastern-Indian. I have extremely curly, layered, thick, just under my shoulders hair. I need some hair styles to wear at school and in public. Right now I can't wear my hair down because it just frizzes out. I'm not straightening it or getting a new cut so don't tell me to. French braids take too long in the morning and messy buns are horrible on me. Thanks!

Cupcake, why not straighten it? It totally damages the hair and I'm sick and tired of having boring straight hair.

Check out some curly sites or books.

Curly Girl by Lorraine Massey is good.

Don't let anyone tell you you can't do anything with your hair. You have to get creative. Buy a lot of hair accessories and play around with them and create some new styles. You don't need anyone to tell you what to do.

You can use:
Pins
Scarves
Bra strap headbands
Bear claw clips
Decorative clips
Beads
Barrettes
Chop Sticks
Decorative Bobby Pins etc

For now some thing you can do it part your hair in half and put the top half in a really high ponytail and let the rest flow down. http://www.americancheerleader.com/images/4_00/hair03.jpg Or you can do a faux hawk. Take some combs or anything else to secure it and push your hair to the center http://a820.g.akamai.net/f/820/822/1d/i.ivillage.com/cosmopolitan/style/org/articles/1004hair2.jpg .You don't have to straighten for any of these styles. Otherwise you can do the same thing straighties can.

About the frizz and stuff, if you want some advice I can give you some.

I know how you feel. I got some curls to. Like extremely curly/kinky hair. And people always talk about how "nappy" my hair is.

Whatever to them. Don't stop trying.

I have curly hair too, so I know what you mean.
You mentionned French braids, they take a lot of time, right, but not if you don't go all the way down. I do two French braids and stop in a pony tail in the back of my head. It takes 5 minutes (max.), it's super cute and it lasts really long, even if you go to the pool or to the beach.
Also, you can do piggy tails with flowers instead of rubber bands. With thick curly hair, it looks great.
I sometimes do a low pony tail on the side with a big flower, and it looks great also.
Well, I hope that helped!

Well what I do is when it frizzes out and I don't have any products what so ever I take a little bit of lotion onto my fingers and rub it in at the tips of my hair. It helps stop the frizz for me but don't put too much on or it'll grease up.

If you do have time though you can straighten your hair without a straightener. Hair Straightening
Forget hair straighteners and straightening irons. If you want to get your hair straight then use an iron. Honestly, a household iron! Now don't do this too often, just save it for special occasions or else your hair will eventually get frazzled! Make sure your hair is completely dry and as straight as you can get it from blow drying.
Straightening technique
Part your hair into two sections, like you are putting it into pigtails. Put one half of you hair into a pig tail with a bobble and concentrate on the other loose side of your hair. Take a small section of this one half of your hair and clip the rest of it back. Take a tea towel and cover your hand with it.

Put this hand on the underneath of your hair, by your face and take the iron, make sure its set on steam and place that on the outer side of your hair and run both hands down your hair to the ends. Now I know you are probably thinking "What! My hair will burn", but I promise you it won't.

Once this section of hair is straight, and believe me it will go poker straight after 30 seconds, clip it up and get another section and repeat. Once one side of your head is done, tie that back into a pigtail and do the other side. Once you have finished your hair will be incredibly straight and very smooth and shiney.

If it is straight put it up in a pony tail.

Hope I Helped good luck :)

Sounds like you want to work with what you have. Go to http://www.seventeen.com/beauty/hairguide/0,,,00.html
If the link doesnt work, type in seventeen.com, hover over "beauty" and look for "hair ideas".

They have how-to steps that are fairly easy to follow.

However, they do not have pictures of what the hairstyle looks like on their website. But in the "hair" issues of seventeen, they have pictures, and you go to the site for the how-to. So basicly, if you want to see what the hairstyle is before you try it, you have to look in the magazine.

Good luck.

P.S I also have curly, hair. And mine is poofy, so I have the same problem. Your right, straightening kills your hair if you do it regulary. It killed mine, cause I started straightening my hair when I was like 10 and now im 13..so yeah.

But if you hate your curly hair, then get thermal re-conditioning. It permentally straightens your hair using adv. technology in Japan, well like until it grows out. Its pricey, but it doesnt damage your hair, you dont have to worry about getting it wet and curling up, its the best thing ive ever done to my hair.

You should try taking the top part of your hair and tying that in a ponytail so you have some of your hair down and some of it partially up. My friend has hair like yours and she does that. Also concider using anti-frizz hair products so you can wear you're pretty hair down.

omg we are like twins!
my hair is just like yours thick, curly, layered. did i mention curly? lol
so anyway i wear my hair down now but i put mouse and sometimes even gel in it to calm the frizz. sometimes i wear it up in a ponytail with mouse and i put hairspray on the top of my head ( so theres no frizz ). when i put my hair in a ponytail i put my side bangs down and i know u said u dont like to straighten but these are just my bangs so i straighten them!! And i bought this thing called topsy tail and it is like a twist thing ( very hard to explain ) here is a link to the picture of topsy tail
http://www.asseenontv.com/prod-pages/images/Topsy-Styles.jpg

Again i know u said u dont like to straighten, but there is this formula called biosilk and you spread it out evenly when ur hair is wet and then you brush it with a round brush and straighten it with a straight iron. It takes about 10 minutes this way. and u dont even know how thick my hair is

i hope this helps!!
