So I'm really interested in getting involved in the HIV/AIDS or Darfur situations in Africa, but I don't know where to start. I'm an American Canadian, and I'd sort of prefer an NGO. I'm not happy just writing a check, I want to go somewhere and help. Any good starting points? Also, I'm in grade 11 right now, so it'll be a bit. Would it be better to go fresh out of high school and return for college later, or is a university degree essential for this kind of work? Thanks!

Peace Corps? I think you need to be a United States citizen.

Do a Google search for the American Foreign Legion. They have all kinds of missions you could go on to all kinds of places where help is needed.
I think it's great to see a young person who wants to get involved and help those in need.

There is one & there are 3 of us trying to remember what it is. Try contacting the Red Cross. I wanted to do it back at your age & my mother talked me out of it. It involved building schools & hospitals & teaching English. Good luck. You're a good person.
