MSG is a naturally occurring compound, generally found in seaweed in nature.
No, it's not particularly good for you if you eat a lot. But the main issue is that some people are actually allergic to it. If that's the case, you'd know it. But if you aren't allergic, it's no big deal.
Many Japanese and some Chinese foods have it, and people eat it all the time. Just don't go overboard.

MSG (Mono Sodium Glutamate) is a flavor enhancer. A little of it would not hurt. Too much MSG could produce what they call the Chinese restaurant syndrome. Chinese restaurants were very fond of using MSG for more flavor; I don't think they do now.
Some people experienced headaches, dizziness, flushing, sweating, even chest pain after a Chinese meal. MSG was linked to all these symptoms, but it was not proved it was the cause. Watch, some people are sensitive to MSG and can experience these symptoms or an allergic like reaction.

As long as you're not overdoing the amount of MSG you take in, it shouldn't be an issue, unless, of course, you're allergic to it. It would break down in solution to sodium ions and glutamate ions, and one raises your sodium levels and the other can penetrate your blood-brain barrier. I believe aspartame, which is a small protein molecule (peptide), can also have this effect. It is aspartic acid linked with glutamic acid (glutamate) , thus it would be worse to have an artificially sweetened treat or drink in conjunction with a heavily MSG-laden meal such as Chinese foods often are. It is good that you read labels; one dish with MSG isn't necessarily bad. But manufacturers put it in lots of canned foods and it can add up.
