I didn't expect him at my husband's funeral, but the Lt. Governor of Illinois was there, he is an awesome man. It would have been very awkward for me to have the president there, that would have put some serious strain on me with the security it would bring. I would not have liked it. But to answer your question, he does not have time, he is busy and there are too many, he would not be a president, he would just be a funeral attender.

I dont think the President should be attending funerals for the very simple reason is that funerals are a private thing - for family.
If the president turns up, the media circus will follow. And the last thing any grieving family wants is a media circus at a very private family time.
Another reason - funerals should not be used for political points. At any large gathering, pressure will be on for the political leaders to make a profound statement. Its a dangerous situation where a leader might say something - that can be taken completely out of text by the media - and used either for or against the President.
The soldiers who have died in war deserve the peace and respect with family and friends - they have paid a price for the stupid political ambitions of the President. Let them have their final time with their families in peace.
God bless and look over those that have fallen......

The media does not show you that he has been to Iraq! I would imagine he has probably at some of their funerals, but some of the bodies are shipped back to the U.S.A. for proper burial by the family and he is probably trying to figure out a way to prevent more casualties without hurting our freedom. The media is NOT PIOUS! They can be very biased so their ratings will go up! He can not attend all of the funerals but past presidents did not go to the funerals of dead soldiers as previously pointed out. I think he really does care and if you haven't noticed, the presidency has aged him! He has more wrinkles and sagging face and you almost never see him smile anymore, have you ever thought about how he must be staying up at night dealing with the stresses of being the president. Please consider my words and I appreciate anyone who is willing to take time to read this. Please read Lynda_vos's comment!

Your question almost sounds disrespectful, but to answer you straight, I think the President does not publicly attend military funerals because if he attended one then there would be hurt or resentment at future funerals that he did not attend. Another factor is probably the logistics involved in the President going anywhere; several planes, the secret service, and of course the press, which is probably yet another reason the President does not attend, he would not want the circus disrupting a funeral.

President Bush would like to be at all of the funerals, so he personnally sends letters to the people who have lost a loved one in combat.
President Bush also has a country to run and has done a great job!!!!!

There are too many of them.
Well, it would be political to go to one funeral and not another. People might count the number of Black/Hispanic/Mormon/Catholic funerals he attends and start saying things like "he doesn't care about Amish, he missed that Amish girl's funeral".
Also, he might be afraid of terrorist repercussions. Terrorists would love to get him at a funeral. So in a way you could say he's hiding.
To bring a president somewhere requires a long stream of security cars, and it make access to ordinary civilians difficult. Many presidents choose to reserve the disruption caused by their presence for big occasions.
So there are a few possible reasons.

I think Lincoln was the last president to attend a funeral of a soldier killed in a war. So where was Wilson, Roosevelt, Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, etc.
(Reagan did attend the funeral of the challenger crew) Bush 1, Clinton?

mCoolbreez is a sack of .... . I didn't see you at the last funeral I attended for a pilot who didn't make it home alive.
He loved his family, friends, country and flying. He also knew that all of those things were in jeopardy because thousands of Americans had been killed in the name of a sick religion nobody understands. The President"s job is not a one issue deal. The hate filled liberals attack him on all fronts and angles of every issue. The American press and the Democrats are the biggest obstacles to the conclusion of the war, the security of our country and the overall progress of our society.
Jane Fonda will look ravishing in her new birka and John Kerry and Ted Kennedy will be quite stylish with their new neckectomys provided by their radical muslim friends. We managed to beat Hitler in his insanity and I believe we can whip the muslims and the democrats.

Security could be an issue. There are too many funerals.
Doesn't want to think about the death he is causing. How would he choose which one to go to? It might be good if he attended one funeral a month. I don't understand why the families of dead soldiers are so silent about the war. Can't believe they just accept the deaths of their loved ones.

...The President would be spending a-lot of time traveling around a very big Country... The Military, under his command does send a "senior officer" (if requested) to every American who has fallen in battle...and a full Military honor guard to activly participate in that funeral... (if the family wants)... each time a soldier is killed in action./war/connected... The Military takes it very very seriously... consider the active 24 hours a day, 365 day a year watch over the tomb of the unknown soldier... rain, snow, hurricane, anything... has not caused this guard to miss a step in the honor of this "one" fallen unknow soldier...ever....
