We had porcelain floor tiles put down in the kitchen about 4 months ago, today I noticed what looked liked little black dots on afew of them but on closer inspection they are like little pin holes, does anyone know what causes this.

My guess would be from the firing in the kiln.

Sounds like the dreaded fish-eyes in the finish. If a tile surface is not completely clean when it is glazed, the finish will not adhere properly to those areas. Dust is usually the culprit. The glaze was not heavy enough to completely cover them. The pinholes may not have been noticed when the tile was first laid unless you looked very closely. After a few cleanings and traffic flow, the holes have a tendency to gather dirt and begin to show a bit more.

Porcelain is baked in an oven, as with pottery. It is porous and the holes have always been there. It is just with constant walking, washing etc that you notice them. Use a good floor cleaning product at least once a week and that should lift the dirt that has accumulated in the holes.

Like bamboo says ceramic floor tile adhesive will do the job if the floor is fairly level and smooth. I generally use a quick set tile adhesive, its like a latex cement that is mixed with water.
