Ash wednesday, this coming wednesday! I am not a christian but believe in something, I have fasted for some years now and think it is great to test your will power and to say to life that you are not a greedy materialistic person, it makes you appreciate more what you have compared to the starving people out in this world. The question is what are you going to sacrifice....it has to be something worthwhile that you know will be a test. The two previous years I was going through the revision exam period at university so the munchies were on...thus I gave up biscuits and last year I gave up chocolate. This year it is slightly difficult as there is no particular food that will be testing apart from the cake man. i am living in MX at the moment and it is a traditon that in many areas in Guadalajara that a van comes round neighbourhoods selling cakes, buns etc thus is a bit of a weakness, hence my decision. i hope this helps you to think a bit more about lent!

Ash Wednesday, the day after Mardi Gras (this year Ash Wednesday falls on Feb 21st but is different every year). Then they continue to fast every Friday thereafter until Good Friday. An alternative to fasting, is just not eating meat on those days.

It is only a Catholic thing and it begins on Ash Wednesday. It is the day after Fat Tuesday (aka Mardi Gras). Some people do not choose to fast from food they might decide to give up cigarettes or caffeine or even watching television.
