What is S&L and Equal made of?

The sweetener in Sweet and Low is saccharin. Equal is aspartame, and Splenda is sucralose. Probably all of them are capable of causing cancer in laboratory animals - if said animals are fed the stuff in astronomical quantities. (If you remember saccharin coming with that health warning and wondering why it doesn't say that anymore, it's mostly because those studies were discredited. [Although it's also because the FDA changed its rules about labeling.])

As for which is better for you, I think the proper scientific answer is "we don't know". We know sugar can be bad for you, because we've been eating it for a long time and have noticed the effects. We know that these artificial sweeteners are not bad for you in the same way that sugar is. What we don't know is whether they're bad for you in other ways.

So, how to choose? If you have phenylketuronia, and if you don't know what that is then you don't have it, then you need to avoid the aspartame in Equal. If consumed in quantities your body is not accustomed to, sucralose (Splenda) can cause, well, let's just say you'll become intimately acquainted with every gas-station restroom between home and work. Saccharin (Sweet & Low) doesn't taste very good. Pick your poison. :)

Splenda = Sucralose (see below for info on the truth about splenda & how it's not really sugar)
SnL & Equal = Aspartame

Is It REALLY Sugar?

There is no question that sucralose starts off as a sugar molecule, it is what goes on in the factory that is concerning. Sucralose is a synthetic chemical that was originally cooked up in a laboratory. In the five step patented process of making sucralose, three chlorine molecules are added to a sucrose or sugar molecule. A sucrose molecule is a disaccharide that contains two single sugars bound together; glucose and fructose.

The chemical process to make sucralose alters the chemical composition of the sugar so much that it is somehow converted to a fructo-galactose molecule. This type of sugar molecule does not occur in nature and therefore your body does not possess the ability to properly metabolize it. As a result of this "unique" biochemical make-up, McNeil Nutritionals makes it's claim that Splenda is not digested or metabolized by the body, making it have zero calories.

It is not that Splenda is naturally zero calories. If your body had the capacity to metabolize it then it would no longer has zero calories.

They are all artificial sweeteners that use different chemical compounds to taste sweet. Sweet & Low has aspertame which contains phenylalinine which is bad if you're sensitive to it. (It also tastes really disgusting if you eat it straight). I'm not sure what Equal contains but it is sweet if you eat it straight. Splenda is cholrinated sugar and is, in theory, supposed to to taste exactly like sugar. The theory is that since that body can't digest and metabolize any of these chemicals you don't get any calories from them. (In reality your body will learn to metabolize aspertame)

Personally I just use sugar or honey. There's only 10 cal a tsp and I know what's going into my body. I honestly think it has to be better than all those chemicals

You don't want to use any 3 of them, because they're all bad for you.
The have aspartame in it, which can cause cancer.the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) did not approve its use as a food additive in the United States for many years. Splenda or also called Sucralose. It was discovered on accident. they were working on making a pesticide. On accident someone got it on his lips and figured out it was sweet. They saw commercial oppertunity and started to sell it as a sugar subtitute. so what you are actually throwing in your drinks is a pesticide.
Some of the evidence is in the wiki, for which I'll list the link.

Splenda is the best. I use Splenda because the other two have been proven to lower sperm count and if I ever ry to have kids I don't want to hinder that. Natural Cures They Don't Want You To Know About has been proven to contain mostly fale information. One of the people that endorsed the book had died several years before it was written.

Splenda (Yellow Stuff) is actually sugar with split molecules to make it calorie free. Sweet and Low (Pink Stuff) is saccharine and was to be banned as it is extremely bad for you. It got approval for Diabetic use only and original approval was (only) until something else could take it's place. When Equal (Blue Stuff) came out, they tried to remove Sweet and Low from the market but diabetics and fat women drinking diet drinks claimed they could not stand the taste of Equal. Nothing ever happened to Sweet and Low - but it is dangerous and causes more harm than any good. Stay away from it. Equal is now the most popular but was to be phased out with the invention of something else too. Splenda was too too expensive (read Greed and not actual cost) when it came out and it is still costly. That is why they let them keep the blue stuff. The blue stuff is also not good for you but is not dangerous to you like the Pink Stuff. The moral here is to use only splenda and products using splenda. But remember - artificial sweetener is the Number One (1) cause of obesity in this country. It causes the brain to react and crave compound sugars (carbs like cake and donuts and pasta and bread) and sweets (Chocolate) to keep that feeling in the brain going. Sugar in moderation is the only answer and it is time we stop buying products with extra added sugar that is there only to keep our addiction to it going.

Splenda don't cause cancer in mice . It is much like sugar in taste. You should use it sparingly it is very sweet. For a diabetic they are all good sugar substitutes. Don't let anyone tell you they are all bad. If you can use sugar of course it is best.

Sweet & low is granular saccharin
Equal is Aspartame
Splenda is Sucralose (wikipedia entry below)
Sucralose is an artificial sweetener known by the trade name Splenda. In the European Union, it is also known under the E number (additive code) E955. It is 320–1,000 times as sweet as sucrose,[2] making it roughly twice as sweet as saccharin and four times as sweet as aspartame. It is manufactured by the selective chlorination of sucrose, by which three of sucrose's hydroxyl groups are substituted with chlorine atoms to produce 1,6-dichloro-1,6-dideoxy-β-D-fructo-furanosyl 4-chloro-4-deoxy-α-D-galactopyranoside or C12H19Cl3O8. Unlike aspartame, it is stable under heat and over a broad range of pH conditions, and can be used in baking, or in products that require a longer shelf life.

Sugar is better for you, preferably raw sugar. Try honey or molasses.
