It was a huge cop out. If the US military decided it was OK to be gay, they could issue an order and it would be done. I'm confident of that. They led the way with racial integration and they can do it in this important area of civil rights.

I was in the Navy when this policy was first introduced, and from my point of view it never had a detrimental affect on non-gays. I don't know of any gays that served with me, so I can't say what affect it had on them, either.
(Having said that, I can tell you that the military is like one big permanent men's locker room as a culture. Take everything you know about a gym locker room and multiply by 10 or 20 for vulgarity, personal attacks and jokes, and team unity as well. If there were any gays around, we would have slaughtered them. I'm pretty sure they keep it a secret regardless of the policy. We did have one guy who was rumored to be gay, and he was immediately removed from the ship "for his own protection". When it turned out the allegations were false, he was returned to duty. I remember talking to him, and I really don't think he was gay.)

It makes sense to me. Unlike blacks being integrated into the military, gays have much more differences than just skin tone. The fact that units need to operate at peak operating efficiency, yet still allowing gays to serve mandates this policy. By and large, sexuality is not permitted in units, and any differences with it cause problems, just by human nature. Again, this warrants that policy.

The military is about accomplishing a mission. As far as I'm concerned each person has an obligation to serve regrdless of their sexual prefrence. Gay men and women can fight and die for this country just like the rest of us. They should't get a pass to stay at home safe and sound while the rest of us die.

Whose business is it what my or your sexual preference is. Do heterosexual people have to go around declaring "I Am Heterosexual!" How stupid is this entire concept.
Just leave people alone and ask the same from them. Who cares! After all, it is a genetic disorder not something you can catch by using the same wash basin. The thing to remember is the Creator did not create every person as a "perfect" human being; he created perfectly every human being.
Get on with life and stop dwelling on homophobia.

The military is a professional environment. I don't let my straight troops talk about their sexuality in the work place, so why should I treat anybody who is gay any differently? Don't ask don't tell is simply a practical policy.

Sadly, the US is not ready for an open and honest society with respect to sexual preference...so the policy is the safest for all concerned. Afterall, we don't have to declare if we are heterosexual...so why the difference?

Very controversial question. I think, IT SHOULDN'T MATTER! If your gay, your gay! If your straight, your straight! Homophobes are concerned that "that gay guy might hit on me!?".....but that's the same thing female soldiers are thinking about these machismo men "that errogant guy might hit on me!?". I think people need to open their eyes and realize that we are in the 21st century. It's okay to be gay, just as it's okay to be straight. Besides, some of the most important figures in our history were gay, but of course this society isn't ready to talk about that, they want that all "hush-hush". I think, if your gay, sport it!! That's you and theres no reason to be ashamed or have to HIDE it from the people you are putting your life on the line for!

people in the military should just be there for the most important purpose: to fight for our country and win. who cares about your sexuality. i think that people could be open with it if they want, but they might want to think about the criticisms that they could be receiving from others, and deal with it. some people just like to keep their mouth shut, and that's okay too.
