the USA did not always have the dollar. in times before the dollar, each of the "states" acted much like their own governments, and each printed their own paper. various names were given to these marks, but they were usually backed by gold, silver, etc...

because of the different monies, trading was kinda hard. if you lived where i currently do, you're on the edge of pennsylvania, about an hour away from jersey and delaware, and perhaps two- three hours to new york. which means that different currencies are used all around.

since it was a pain to decide how much each was worth against each other all the time, when the "states" were unionized, one step was to use the same currency throughout, so that no one need to fear they are being ripped off by their neighbor

the dollar probably got its name through a vote in congress or something

Pretty much since our Govt has been printing money, its been called a DOLLAR... Are you refering to the new One Dollar coins they are putting out? We have had those in the past, but they fell out of favor for paper currency in that denomination. Now, the govt is trying to bring them back... (sure - just make everything cost $1...like phone booths, pay toilets, parking meters.... damn jackals...)
