Don't ask, don't tell.

Yes. Well,...sort of.

Don't ask, don't tell" is the common term for the U.S. military policy which implements Pub.L. 103-160 (10 U.S.C. § 654). Unless one of the numerous exceptions from 10 U.S.C. 654(b) applies, the policy prohibits anyone who has sexual bodily or romantic contact with a person of the same sex from serving in the armed forces of the United States, and prohibits any homosexual or bisexual from disclosing his or her sexual orientation, or from speaking about any homosexual relationships, including marriages or other familial attributes, while serving in the United States armed forces. The policy also requires that as long as gay or bisexual men and women in the military hide their sexual orientation, commanders are not allowed to investigate their sexuality.

It was introduced as a compromise measure in 1993 by President Bill Clinton who, while campaigning for the Presidency, had promised to allow all citizens regardless of sexual orientation to serve openly in the military, a departure from the then complete ban on those who are not heterosexual. The actual policy was crafted by Colin Powell and has been maintained by Clinton's successor, George W. Bush. The policy is opposed by some pro- and anti-gay advocates alike.

Bill (not Hillary) Clinton was going to allow homosexuals in the military, but after the uproar, a "don't ask don't tell" policy was implemented instead.

So, they can't do a search to find out if someone is "lesbian", or interrogate them about it. But, if someone were to openly promote lesbianism, or otherwise willingly give themselves away, they could be dismissed.

So, they are allowed to join, but they are also allowed to be fired for it. You can still use MASH style techniques to try to get kicked out.

When I took the Asvab, they gave us a speech about it.

The ban was instituted by Eisenhower, not just in the military but in every form of public service, who at one point accused McCarthy of being queer (and McCarthy tried to prove Ike was a commie).

Only heterosexual women of child-bearing age are allowed to risk their life for their country. Their deaths help keep the population down. If carpet-munchers die in Iraq, it's a waste.

Yes, but there's the Don't Ask, Don't Tell rule. It's not a question soeone asks you when you join. It's private information and if you're asked, you don't have to answer it. I don't see what the problem with it is. If you can fight and you're smart, and you want to protect this country, go for it.

Lesbians are just as "allowed" as gay men.

Technically neither one is "allowed". But, remember there is "Don't ask - Don't tell".

However, if a "person" wants to serve their country, why should they be denied? (Which I suppose is another question unto itself.)

As long as no one knows about it who will turn them in. Lesbians and homosexuals have been in militaries around the world for CENTURIES (yup, even the ROMAN LEGIONNAIRES had them),

Have you never heard of the, "don't ask, don't tell" pocicy of the new military? They won't ask, and you are not to tell if you're homosexual, or you willsuffer the consequences which may result.

Yes. The whole "don't ask, don't tell" thing is still in effect. In fact, you can only get chaptered out if you are caught "red handed".

S: Statements
A: Acts
M: Marriages

Those are what will get you in trouble.
