(little background info) My parents only want me to date a Chinese guy because they are old fashioned. We are fresh from San Francisco were there are many Asians to Houston were they are all spread out. The guy I’m dating is 6”1”, long blonde hair with colored eyes, totally not Chinese. My parents are going to flip out when they see him they don’t care about his attributes. I completely adore his passionate side, his intelligence, and he has an edge the bad boy in him just turns me on. How do I let my parents know without giving them a heart attack? I’m more worried about my Dad because Christian can charm my mom. I am 22 but my parents pay for my school and I stay w/ them so they do have some say.

"Mom, Dad meet my boyfriend (his name here)" I think you run a bigger risk of violating their trust and confidence in you by not telling them than you do by being open and honest. Respecting your elders and trying to do the right thing s important, but at the same time, you need to do what makes you happy. You will only have to look one person in the face every day for the rest of your life, and that person is you. Just be up front, no secrets. I hope this helps you somehow.

I completely understand where you are coming from, though my perspective is from the other side - I'm white and I've dated several Asian women, some of whom had very strict parents. Here are a couple of strategies my previous girlfriends have used.

(1) Introduce him as "just a friend." This would give your parents time to get to know him without the added and immediate relationship pressure. Once they get to know him and feel comfortable with him, they are more likely to accept him as a match for their daughter.

(2) Make sure he meets your mom without your dad around. If he is able to charm your mom, then you will have another person in your corner when you finally tell your pops.

(3) Just go for it. If he is as charming, passionate, intelligent, etc. as you say he is, he will be able to convince them that he is the right guy for you. Ultimately, parents generally just want to see their kids happy.

Yes, because we didn't have the luxury to do stupid things, and get away with it like whites. Growing up, if I misbehaved I got beat lol. There was no time out sessions like what some white parents do. Also, we had to be on our best behavior at school because if you weren't you got yelled at and then your *** lit up by a belt too when you got home. Now, I dont agree with beating your child. When I have kids I will not beat them. But my parents are old fashioned and from back east so spanking your child is the norm if you're black. Did it damage me? No, but it taught me how people are supposed to behave. When I'm in public, I'm the most civilized person out of all my peers. It's not to say whites don't spank their kids, because I know some who do, but on a whole they are much more liberal. It all boils down to culture, and your parents we're raised.

I had strict parents kind of like this. The first thing that you have to be prepared to do is be out on your own. Then you can make a stand and tell them that this is my boyfriend, I care about him, and whether you like it or not I'm going to continue seeing him. If you are self depenedent, then they can really do anything to stop you. You need to take a stand.

Tell them he's a fellow student and friend and that you are part of an international group of students that travel and study together. That should be non-committal enough to keep your father from having the coronary. And, at your age and education level, you shouldn't be misspelling "where"...
