I have 5 dogs and one of the boxers eats too fast, especially when we come home, or someone new comes to visit, she also drinks the same way. The vet said that often when they eat or drink to quickly they can get air in their tummy and throat and make them do that sort of thing, maybe feed him smaller quantities more often. The other dog is a pit bull and chews his big kong to to pieces and ends up dry heaving the pieces up if we dont take the pieces away before he eats them, so maybe he has something like human hair in his throat or grass stuck in it.....
last but not least....my old man the poodle.... he does this thing that scared the crap out of us at first, its like a loud spasm that we though was like a seizure or something....turns out its nothing the vet said....just INVERTED SNEEZING. lol.....totally harmless and scary sounding when he does it. Its nothing....
I hope that it something like on of these.....totally managable and harmless

That happened to my dog. Just go to the pet store and buy a tub of hairball medicine for cats. Dogs get hairball too, especially those with long hair or like to eat stuff from the floor or carpet. Now I give that medicine to him once a month as a snack and problem never came back. Good luck.

It may be asthma if he does it regularly. He may also have an obstruction. How old is he? How is his heart? Old dogs develop heart conditions that make them heave.
He may have a food allergy, try a hypo allergenic food, or food for sensitive stomach for a while.

Sounds like he's cleaning himself and getting hairballs in his throat. I used to have a dog that made this awful chuffing noise for ages, a kind of cross between coughing and gagging - I never understood what caused it and it never made her ill (she lived for 15 years), so I wouldn't worry too much.

Your dog could have acid reflux.
We've given ours Tums and it seems to work
OK - and the dogs love it. They treat it like
dog treats.
