My mother will soon be starting Kidney Dialysis at home, and as her carer I will be trained to connect her lines, work the machine and give injections. I'm not sure how I'll cope. Any advice from those in similar situations? All suggestions most appreciated.

There is nothing scarier in the beginning! It seems intimidating, you're afraid you will do it wrong, you're afraid you will hurt her...But amazingly, after the first week, it will be much easier. Familiarity with the routine will make all this seem commonplace. However, a key component is your mom. She needs to develop a sense of humor to allow for those few errors you may make, and she has to figure out that when injections are uncomfortable and she is nervous, that it is not your fault. I recommend that you talk to her about how she feels about your help.

Once you've been trained and have done it a few times, you'll get to do it better than the dialysis people themselves. Just keep in mind that you're doing it for your mother and learn all you can. You'll do great and I know your mother will really appreciate your care.

Have confidence in yourself, be positive, pray and thank God that she is still with you, for every day you have with her, might be your last. Dios te bendiga
Sincerely, Charlie H.
