Yeah, I knew that since I was an active duty Marine from 2000-2004. Did you know that the Marine Corps was originally created to be more of a police-unit to keep the order on navy vessels?
The Marines have been dispatched all over, but probably one of their most interesting missions was to protect trains in the early 1900s from mail bandits.

Actually, the Marines used to take orders from the CNO but they now have their own Commadant that answers to the Joint Chiefs and the Secretary of the Navy. The Commandant is no longer in direct orders from the CNO unless he happens to be the Chairman of the JCS but at this time, it happens to be a Marine general. In 1952, Congress gave the Commadant equal status on the JCS.

each department of the military must beable to deal with each element air, land, sea.
army has naval and air forces
navy had land and air forces
i am not sure of the aire force has any naval forces but they do have land forces.
