You need to buy sheets by the thread count in them. The thread count starts at about 125 and goes up, the higher the count the better the sheet.

$99.00 is NOT cheap for a set of sheets, and they should not have pilled. Don't put anything else in the washer or dryer with your sheets. Other items rubbing against them (especially big heavy towels) makes the threads in the sheets break faster (that's what causes the "bumps"). Wash on a medium or gentle cycle; dry on a gently cycle. (Everything to minimize the friction). Use fabric softener. Buy all cotton sheets, not synthetic or synthetic blends. Synthetic fibers tend to break easier than good cotton. A higher thread count helps, but don't go crazy; 200 is probably good enough. The type of fabric is more important (cotton, rather than synthetic). If the person sleeping in the bed has coarse body hair, or doesn't trim his/her toenails carefully, that can also contribute to damage to the sheets.

It is ALL about the thread count. I cannot fathom how anyone buys sheets with less than 300, they feel like sandpaper and fall apart (get bumps) so easily!! Bed Bath & Beyond is a great place to buy good sheets & they're always mailing out those 20% off coupons (which fyi never expire). I get the Sateen Stripe Sheet Set, 350 count, but I think they have 440 count now (time to upgrade, hee hee). About $80 (+ tax), but w/the discount it's pretty affordable. You can buy them online too.

Thread count, not cost, is the bottomline. Look for count over 300 per square inch. Contact the manufacturer and complain.
I got Egyptian cotton sheets for the boys at Linens N Things for under $50- had them 3 years with no pilling.

It has been my long experience that any fabric with polyester blended into it will eventually pill (have raised bumps called pilling). Pay less attention to price and brand and more to fabric content. For sheets go for 100% cotton and at least a thread count of 200.

Go to Bed Bath and Beyond, they should have sheets that have 400 or more threadcount sheets that you want in the colors that you can select from.

It's a reasonable price for a reasonable set. The above poster's advice about how to wash/dry them is good.
However, I'm a fan of making an investment in my sheets. I'm spending a third of my life on them, it's worth it to me. I go for pima/egyptian cotton, 600 thread count. The initial financial hit is high, but wow, is it worth it!
