In the area I live there has been a rash of bridge jumpers commiting suicide, so much so that suicide hotline phones will be installed on thoses bridges. My question is, when some one jumps off a bridge into the water below, what kills them ? Is it the impact of the fall that causes a heart attack ? Is it getting sucked down in to the undertow that drowns them? What is it that kills them from the fall ?

Depending on the height, it can be a heart attack from the stress of the fall, drowning, or the shock with the water. If you fall at a certain speed, the water is not so flexible when you hit it. Its almost like hitting a brick wall. You either die from your injuries (broken bones, neck) or you die from passing out form impact and then drowning.

Blunt force Trauma causing massive internal injuries usually. There is also the possibility of the impact happening at just the right time during the cardiac cycle to cause a deadly arrhythmia.

In most cases it is the sheer force of impact. Upon impact, the body receives massive internal and blunt force injuries.

good question. i think it would be the impact of the landing, but i don't know how high the bridge is. if it isn't that, i imagine the river would suck them down and drown them. but, i'm not really sure.

usually the impact when they hit the water (because their body was falling very fast) or they could possibly drown especially if they hit the water and become unconsious. ive also heard that while falling u could die because it it too much pressure on the heart

Could be either of the scenarios that you mentioned...impact or drowning. I do not really want to try it to prove either theory and hopefully you do not either. Hope the phones help.

impact of the water, is like hitting cement, if you don't die from the impact you wll probably die from drowning because your injuries are so severe that you cannot swim.

I believe it would be blunt force trauma. Hitting the water at a great speed isn't any better than hitting concrete.
