If the metal casing gets hot enough, it might ignite the gun powder inside...

Yes it could go off! If it got hot enough or if the primer cap was struck by something like if he fell or smashed into something by accident, there are reports of this happening before, Tell your cousin he's an idiot. Now there is a small chance of this happening but thats not a gamble I'd be willing to take especially so close to my boys!

Only an idiot carries around a live round in his pocket! All he needs is for something to strike the primer hard enough, and the round WILL go off.

As for going off because of heat, you'd have to expose the round to a flame to get it hot enough for the powder inside the casing to ignite.

Your idiot cousin has a better chance of it going off in his pocket.

The chances of a modern day cartridge going off in the pocket by rattling around with other things, or by heat is very remote.

Sure it can. When I was young, my friends parents had a .357. We used to steal bullets, go out into the field and tape a BB to the primer, then hit it with a hammer - BANG! they go off. Also, toss one into a fire and run like hell - it goes off (stupid kids we were...) So, if his pants got hot enough, or if the primer say, hit exactly on the rivet on jeans, it could easily go off in his pocket and blow his nutz off.
