Get a henna one first try each one out. A friend of mine tried this and she actually decided not to get tone after 8 weeks of having a henna one.
Just a thought to make sure you get what you want.

Shoulder is a great place. It will hurt a little bit, but not alot. I'm a woman and I have both my shoulders tattooed, and tattoos on my feet (not ankles). The feet definately hurt way more - I nearly cried.
Anyway, I suggest what someone else already did: Henna. I usually Henna all my designs before I get them tattooed. I've decided against three tattoos with the henna idea and stuck with the other 6.
What would be a good idea would maybe be a phoenix with your chinsese name instead of the wings - that would be different!! Have the body of the phoenix drawn horizontally across your shoulder blades and then the wings can be written in real nice chinese script...the artist could make it still look like wings, but it would be different but still incorporate both ideas that you have.

I'm Chinese myself...Since you're Chinese/Viet and you know that your name is your name....then if you really want to get that, then get that. The only thing that i would comment on though is whether you would be getting your name because you're not sure what else to get, but you want to get a tattoo? I would not recommend getting a tattoo just to get a tattoo. I know that my cousin is saying that she wants to get her name but she seems to be wanting to get her name because she's not sure what else to get tattooed on her...but she wants a tattoo.
Re: a phoenix...you may not be able to get a "small" tattoo of that just because of how elaborate a phoenix is. If you want the tattoo to look good, this may be a larger tattoo design just so that the artist can add embellishments to make your tattoo "come alive" somewhat? Chinese phoenix's are very elaborate and I am not sure how small you want your tattoo.
Going to assume that you're in CA from either the LA area, SJ area or Stockton area because of the large chinese/viet population in the areas...kind of presumptuous but oh wells....
Pls feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
Best of luck!

I always tell people the first one should be temporary, like a henna tattoo. Try it on for a few weeks and then see if it's really what you want. Also, get an artist to draw up a few sketches. Don't rush in but do look for the right tattoo, and a good tattoo artist.

Tanqueray, I can understand you wanting to get a tattoo...I wanted one when I turned 18 to but for various reasons it took 28 years before that happened....that was five years and several tattoos ago. Next month I'm having it covered.....All I'm saying is be careful, take your time, look at lots of tattoos in all shapes, sizes and styles. A good site for this is www.tattooartists.org Once you decide on something use the best artist you can find.(thats where I made my mistake)....
good luck

since you're heritage is actually chinese/vietnamese, i think it's actually a great idea to get your chinese name...alot of people with those tattoos don't really deserve them. i think it'd be beautiful on someone with that nationality or whatever. go for it!

I would do the Phoenix, because how do you know for sure that Chinese name your looking at is real?? I wouldn't trust the Chinese symbols at the tattoo shops because most of them are wrong!!!
Do some research on both name/symbol and Phoenix, and whichever you relate to more, go for it!!!!!

a tiny blue or red heart is nice. I have a sun on my hip. It's small.
