I am trying the turbo tax online for the first time and so far have gotten through most of it no problem. However, when I implemented in a couple of charitable donations (total of $400) and also a deduction for gas coming from PA to CA for work, it didn't change my amount at all. Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong as I'd like to get this done this weekend. Thanks!

It could be that your total deductions are not over the Standard Deduction, which means they use the standard as it's better for you.

It all comes out on the bottom line. If you're using itemized deductions then you'll also need to make sure you keep those receipts for 7 yrs. If you take the standard deductions you don't itemize. But it subtracts and adds the bottom line. You must have more than just the standard deductions before it makes a difference, otherwise just use the standard deductions. Just finish it and see what the outcome is before you file. You can make all kinds of changes before you actually file the return.

Check to see if you have enough deductions to itemize on Schedule A. Maybe you're getting the standard deduction? You get the greater of the standard deduction or the amount of your itemized deductions. You could test this by changing your contributions to say 20,000 and then see if the tax changes. (Of course you should change the number back to the correct amount)

if you are filing single, then your standard deduction is $5,150. your "itemized" deductions would have to exceed $5,150. but there are also other limitations. miscellaneous expenses like gas, etc. will only be deductible in excess of 2% of your adjusted gross income (AGI).

go to "show my return" and look at Form Schedule A. it sounds to me like you dont have enough deductions and would benefit more from taking the standard deduction.

those deductions may not matter in regards to a refund, you may have to have a certain amount of deductions in that category to qualify.
