If you have a male dog then it could be that their anal glands have become clogged and they are trying to relieve the clog by rubbing their butts along the carpet. These glands did their work when dogs were wild creatures by marking territory that belonged to them. Now it is no longer needed for our dogs. This needs to be corrected by going to your vet and having them expressed. It could mean that they have worms too. If your are properly taking care of your dog then they should not have worms at all. All heart worm medications have a worm killing medicine in it along with the heart worm medication. So if you are giving your dog it's heart worm meds year though then you should not have a worm problem. If not then bring a stool sample into the vets to have them check for worms.

Some dogs wipe their butts on the floor because they have worms. I would check the floor after your dog wiped his butt, if you something white I would take your dog in to the Vet to make sure he doesn't have worms.

Dragging their butt across the floor is NOT a sign a dog has worms.
They are trying to express their anal glands. You may want to take your dog to vet so they can express the anal glands, as they can get compacted and infected if they aren't expressed.
Generally dogs anal glands get expressed when they have a bowel movement. However with the "crap" (kibble) that is being fed to dogs these days, alot of dogs have stools that are to soft to effectively express the glands.

Dogs have a glad located just under the rectum. Get a vetinarian to show you how to squeese this gland. It get full with yuck and when it gets full, it itches. It has a very bad odor and when squeezed out, it looks brown. It is usually done by a groomer who "does the glands". If you don't know what you are doing, it can hurt your dog and bruse tissue.

Dogs do this because they have glands in their rearends that become itchy. These glands are called anal sacks and they are scent glands dogs use to mark their territory. The glands get itchy because they become dirty & clogged. If it gets too bad you should take the dog to the vet to have treatment, but if it not too bad you can deal with it yourself by keeping the rearend clean.

Jess is absolutely right. i had a small wiener/chuawa mix, who started doing the same thing. i brought him to the vet. he showed me the pustules on his spinchter. I had to hold Taco down cuz he bites. The the doctor popped the glands. Let me say that I would never have thought such a small creature as Taco was able to produce such a foul oder!!! He then said,"You know, you could do this yourself". YEA RIGHT.....It is worth the 15 bucks to have you do it........Smell ya later doc.

The dog's anal glands may be full and need excreted. The motion helps to relieve it. Take your dog to the vet or groomer to have them expel the stuff. (I've read online that it's rather foul, and for that reason I'd much rather have someone else do it.)

Yes, it's an itch. But it could also be that the glands that are around the anis are full. If it is a real problem, go to the vet, they can gently squeeze the glands and help clean that up.
